Job description

Position Summary

The Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) provides screening, preventive clinical services, counselling and education about oral health issues to community members in accordance with the Ontario Public Health Standards. These services are provided in schools, and the dental clinics at the Health Unit. The Dental Hygienist is available to answer questions from local oral health providers about both clinical issues, and also Ministry programs.

Basic Function :

  • Plan, implement / deliver and evaluate programs which promote dental and oral health to various groups within the County

Position Description :

  • Identify and assess the oral health needs of various groups within the County
  • Teach clients appropriate oral hygiene strategies to maintain oral health (tooth brushing, flossing and nutritional counselling)
  • Provide oral health information to the community and promote awareness of dental programs
  • Ensure proper documentation to meet Ministry standards
  • Develop, deliver and evaluate the public health dental programs and related activities as per Ontario Public Health Standards
  • Promote oral health using pamphlets, newsletters and presentations
  • Plan and schedule activities to ensure that annual program goals are met
  • Conduct dental screening, intro-oral exams and ensure follow up in a timely manner
  • Provide essential clinical preventive oral health services (sealants, fluoride and scaling) to clients in need of those services
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records in all cases in the delivery of public health dental programs
  • Contribute to the identification and prioritization of areas for improvement within the six dimensions of quality (safe, effective, efficient, timely, person-centred and equitable).
  • Engage with colleagues in a systematic approach to quality improvement, including the definition of the purpose and scope; development, testing and implementation of change ideas; and measurement of reach and impact.

  • Requirements

    Knowledge and Experience :

  • Two (2) year Community College in Dental Hygiene plus an undergraduate degree in health related studies, or equivalent
  • One (1) to two (2) years’ experience in an active dental practice to be familiar with scope of position, or equivalent previous experience
  • Current registration (CDHO) to practice in Ontario as a Registered Dental Hygienist
  • Current certification in BLS-HCP-Basic First Aid
  • Basic knowledge of the principles of health promotion
  • Previous experience as a Registered Dental Hygienist in a Public Health Unit considered an asset
  • Skills and Abilities :

  • Valid Ontario driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle
  • Able to work independently and collaboratively within a team setting
  • Computer expertise in corporate standard software (Microsoft Office) and department specific software to data search and entry and to create and modify word processed documents
  • Must be aware of safe work practices as they relate to job responsibilities and work environment, and have the basic understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
