Reporting to the Lead, Communications, the Manager, External Communications is responsible for developing therapeutic area and brand communications strategy, and executing tactics that support our business objectives, as well as contributing to several corporate communications initiatives including the co-management of our corporate social media channels.

  • Actively participate in therapeutic area brand teams, lead brand communications strategy and tactical plan development, pitch and present brand strategies to senior managers, and oversee the execution and measurement of these programs;
  • Work collaboratively with cross-functional colleagues – including Patient Engagement, Commercial, Regulatory, Market Access & Government Affairs, Medical, etc. – to deliver on brand strategic objectives, specific to each therapeutic area;
  • Develop and lead brand and non-brand related strategies to raise AbbVie’s profile and enhance and protect AbbVie’s reputation;
  • Champion digital and social media activities in order to enhance AbbVie’s external reputation and positively engage with key stakeholders;
  • Work closely with colleagues, including senior leaders, as a communications partner on strategic issues and initiatives, being able to anticipate and manage stakeholder reactions, and provide situational context and counsel on emerging and evolving issues;
  • Support internal communications for brand and therapeutic area milestones;
  • Liaise with AbbVie’s Global and Area Public Affairs colleagues to leverage large scale initiatives and localize programs for the Canadian market;
  • Develop key messages, press releases, social content and other communications materials for use with media and other stakeholders;
  • Ensure PR agencies are optimally managed – from having contracts in place to ensure ROI and value for money. Manage PR agencies on a day-to-day basis as necessary.

Skills

  • Experience managing and measuring large scale, impactful communications campaigns that leverage paid, earned and owned activities;
  • Demonstrated record of success in synthesizing complex research-related issues to develop effective communications;
  • Experience in social content creation and content strategy, familiarization with publishing platforms an asset;
  • Ability to build trusted relationships with colleagues and third parties;
  • Very good budget and time management skills;
  • Strong planning, organisational and negotiation skills;
  • Well-developed networking and influencing abilities to leverage relationships within and outside of AbbVie.
  • Qualifications

    Requirements :

  • Bachelors of Communications or equivalent;
  • Five to eight years working in a communications department of a multi-national or public relations agency;
  • Asset : experience with partnering with patient associations;
  • Experience leading and developing strategy and operating at a senior level
  • English and French must be at advanced level, oral and written
  • Proficient in using MS Office Suite and all related new technologies in relationship to the role and the work environment.
  • Comfortable and efficient working in a matrix structure environment.
