Practical Law Canada is looking for a Senior Specialist Legal Editor who has a passion for research and writing to create lawyer-specific resources for our Practical Law Canada Employment Service.
We are looking for a lawyer with at least 8-10 years of experience practicing employment law, whether on the employer or plaintiff-side, to assist with expanding the scope of our legal know-how employment law materials.
As a full-time Senior Specialist Legal Editor on Practical Law’s Canadian Employment Service team, you will have the opportunity to apply your practical legal experience in a highly professional environment with other experienced lawyers.

About the Role
In this opportunity as Senior Specialist Legal Editor you will :
- Conceptualize, draft and edit original legal know-how materials, including Practice Notes, annotated Standard Documents and Checklists for online and print publication, in accordance with Practical Law Canada writing standards.
- Focus and shape the future of Practical Law Canada’s employment law content.
- Maintain current awareness of and analyze law and market practice in Canadian employment law.
- Assist with the development of special projects undertaken by Thomson Reuters and Practical Law Canada.
- Organize and conduct webinars on topics of interest to lawyers practicing in the employment law area, and assist with marketing initiatives and sales demonstrations.
- Develop and use existing relationships with in-house counsel and legal practitioners to ensure that the employment law content is topical and meets their needs.
About You
You’re a fit for the role of Senior Specialist Legal Editor, if you have the following skills and experience :
- Call to the Bar from a Canadian common law province or territory (J.D. or LL.B.).
- At least eight years working as an employment lawyer in a law firm or as in-house counsel dealing with employment issues.
- Expertise in all aspects of employment law including employment contracts, wrongful dismissal, human rights, and employment litigation.
Business immigration and / or traditional labor law experience is an asset.
- A solid understanding of the needs of law firm lawyers and corporate counsel with respect to all areas of employment law practice.
- Ability to understand and interpret fundamental workings and trends within a target industry.
- Familiarity with electronic legal research techniques.
- Enthusiasm and ambition, with a desire to improve the efficiency of legal services.
- A passion for writing and good editing skills, including :
- Very close attention to detail;
- impressive command of grammar, punctuation, and plain English; and
- the ability to write about complex legal issues clearly and simply.
Candidates selected for a second interview will be required to provide a writing sample.
