Job description

Job Summary :

The Controls Mechanic is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting and modifying the campus building

automation systems.

Representative Accountabilities :

  • Techincal Accountabilities :
  • Troubleshoot, repair and update varying components of the building automation system, ranging from actuators, field controllers, programming logic / sequencing and field related HVAC issues. Equipment includes but not limited to supply fans, air handlers, high plume exhaust fans, chillers, boilers, etc.
  • Maintain operation / maintenance of all HVAC systems / components and perform all required pre-functional and functional tests in a scheduled basis.
  • Perform preventative and corrective replacements of valves, controllers, sensors, controller software upgrades / back-up / recovery, as required.
  • Provide support for project related activities, which includes but not limited to : onsite field review, contractor co-ordination, etc.
  • Update equipment records as required.

General Accountabilities :

  • Operates within established security and safety regulations.
  • Remains knowledgeable and current with certification requirements through participation in courses,
  • instructional seminars and trade shows as required and / or sponsored by the University.
  • Communicates with fellow workers, faculty, students, staff and visitors in an appropriate and
  • effective manner.
  • Performs job assignments in an efficient and effective manner with minimum supervision.
  • Effort :

  • Required to lift and carry equipment and supplies (up to 50 lbs).
  • Required to stand for prolonged periods of time.
  • Required to work in awkward positions and to work with hands above head for prolonged periods of
  • time.
  • Required to concentrate for prolonged periods when performing installation and repair work.
  • Working Conditions :

  • Work is conducted in University owned and operated buildings, including mechanical rooms and electrical rooms.
  • Work is conducted in a setting with exposure to inclement weather, dust and dirt.  Exposure to loud noise and vibration from machinery and tools.
  • Required to work independently, in teams, alone and / or in isolated work environments.
  • Required to work at heights including but not limited to a 50 foot-lift.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment.
  • Supervision :

  • May be required to be a day-to-day resource on work procedures students and casual staff.
