The department of Biological Sciences at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) pursues detailed knowledge of the natural world, effective management of natural resources, novel technologies and medical techniques. The department of Biological Sciences is comprised of faculty who are innovative researchers and engaging teachers that make important contributions to society. The Centre for the Neurobiology of Stress (CNS) is a state-of-the-art infrastructure facility founded in 2000. The facility brings together researchers from the departments of Biological Sciences, Physical and Environmental Sciences, and Psychology at UTSC as well as local, national, and international collaborators. The CNS is comprised of several facilities including an advanced electrophysiology and microscopy facility, animal behavioural testing and surgical facilities, cellular and molecular biology suites, and an arctic field research station.

Your opportunity :

Reporting to Director of CNS, with direct supervision by the CNS Lab Administrator & Electron Microscopy Technician, the Laboratory Technician will provide integral support to teaching and research operations within the Department of Biological Sciences, as well as to the broader UTSC campus. The Lab Technician will be responsible for the safe operation of the department’s autoclaves, and glass washers by ensuring equipment is properly maintained, providing expertise and training to students, and resolving issues as they arise. In addition, the incumbent will assist technical operations within the CNS by performing routine tasks, ordering supplies, maintaining inventories, and conducting experiments to test the functioning of equipment.

Your responsibilities will include :

  • Ensure safe operation of department’s autoclaves and glass washers for teaching and research labs.
  • Constructing experiments to troubleshoot, calibrate and test scientific equipment.
  • Scheduling the use of lab equipment and resources to ensure research and teaching operations run smoothly and efficiently.
  • Collaborating on cost estimates.
  • Ordering supplies with approval.
  • Serving as a technical resource on laboratory protocols, and experimental procedures and equipment.

Essential Qualifications :

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biological Sciences or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum two years of recent and related experience working in an undergraduate and / or research laboratory.
  • Experience assisting with laboratory exercises and / or courses, and preparing each laboratory classroom with equipment, supplies, experimental preparation and / or the use of new methods.
  • Experience serving as a technical resource on laboratory protocols, and experimental procedures and equipment.
  • Experience setting up lab / workshops according to research and / or course schedules.
  • Experience with ensuring that all laboratory preparatory, classrooms and equipment are maintained in a clean state.
  • Experience with providing detailed explanations and demonstrations of experiments, media, solutions and reagents, procedures, laboratory techniques and the safe use of lab equipment.
  • Experience assisting with the preparation and testing of all reagents (biological and chemical) required for experiments.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to efficiently interact with course instructors, coordinators, and teaching assistants.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills working with standard teaching laboratory equipment, including autoclave.
