Job description

Job Title: Summer Long Camp Nurse

Vacancies: This posting is for 1 existing vacancy.

Location: Vancouver, BC (Please see the commitment section below for details on locations)

Work Model: In-person work model

Rate of Pay: $231.06/day (6 days per week)

This is a contract position from approximately May – August 2026.

MAKING AN IMPACT

The Canadian Cancer Society’s Camp Goodtimes provides children and youth affected by cancer and their families with an unforgettable overnight summer camp experience in a medically supervised, safe and supportive environment. We have been committed to providing a camping experience for children affected by cancer since 1985.

The Canadian Cancer Society believes that time spent at camp allows kids to just be kids, away from their diagnosis. Camp Goodtimes is proud to provide programming that gives joy, confidence, support, and hope for children with cancer and their families.

The summer long nurse works with the Medical Clinical Coordinator, medical team, and leadership team to ensure the safety of campers, and provides consistency of medical processes throughout the summer. He/She/They will give medications, perform treatments, manage illness and follow procedures as required to care for the Camp population. He/She/They will clearly document medical treatment, required follow up, and incident reports on any and all issues that may need further attention. He/She/They will support the general health and well-being of all campers, volunteers, and staff on site.

This position is a member of the leadership team and the medical team at camp. The leadership team works together to build a positive camp culture and ensure the safety and overall well-being of camp participants. The medical team changes each week of camp and is made up of nurses, residents and physicians who provide medical support and safety for up to 70 Camp Goodtimes participants and 60 staff and volunteers.

COMMITMENT:

  • May 8, 9, June 6, 7, 16, 17, 23, 24 – In person training in Vancouver or at camp at Loon Lake Lodge and Retreat Centre, Maple Ridge, BC
  • June 28– August 2, 2026 – on-site living at camp for 6 sessions at Loon Lake Lodge and Retreat Centre, Maple Ridge, BC (at least 24 hours off each week). Meals and accommodation included.
  • August 8 – 27, 2026 – on-site living at camp for 4 sessions at Camp Pringle, Shawnigan Lake, BC (at least 24 hours off each week). Meals and accommodation included.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING:

  • Be acquainted with the Health Care Facility (Med Shed) and the camp and support training of weekly medical teams:Emergency equipment, phones, fire and earthquake drill, missing child procedure, waterfront accident, procedure for sending a camper home or to hospital (Health Care Team Member to accompany in cases due to medical reasons).
  • Perform treatments and follow procedures as required within your scope of practice and in accordance with BC Children’s Hospital policies and procedures.
  • Be in regular communication with the Clinical Coordinator regarding any exceptional occurrences or serious issues.
  • Help maintain on-going stock inventory.
  • Behave in a sensitive, responsible, mature manner at all times and be a positive role model for campers. Demonstrate leadership, initiative, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude.
  • Communicate with volunteers and staff to ensure the safety and well-being of the campers.
  • Ensure all participant, volunteer, and staff health and medical information is available and ready for use during registration and at camp.
  • Coordinate health screening of all camp attendees upon arrival to camp.
  • Pre- and Post-campAssist in set-up and take-down of the Med Shed and it’s supplies/equipment at both Camp locations.Ensure campers are safely picked up and signed out by a family member or designate.Ensure that each camper has medications returned to them and that any problems or issues that occurred at camp are discussed with the parent(s) or guardian.
  • Maintain camper confidentiality at all times.
  • Contribute to our culture of diversity, inclusion, belonging and equity (DIBE) by ensuring that all staff feel represented, valued, and heard across all aspects of their identity, including gender, age, religion, ethnicity, nationality, race, and sexuality.
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of pediatric cancer including diagnoses, treatment, and side effects (both long and short term).
  • Knowledge of how a pediatric cancer diagnosis impacts the child, their siblings, and their family as a whole.
  • Knowledge of oncological emergencies and their treatments
  • Knowledge of general Camp medicine
  • Ability to work in a team environment with children and volunteers
  • Previous overnight summer camp experience an asset
  • Experience in general pediatrics or emergency an asset
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR-C
  • Current BCCNM nursing license
  • APHON chemotherapy and biotherapy certification an asset
  • Central Line certification an asset
  • Criminal Record Search including vulnerable sector check (once hired)
  • Must provide proof of up-to-date childhood immunizations
  • Must provide proof of a primary series (initial vaccine and one booster) of the COVID-19 vaccines as well as a booster within 12 months of their camp start date
  • English is required; French/Bilingualism (French /English) is an asset due to the organization’s nationwide operations.
