Project SEARCH is an exciting work-focused program for students identified as having a developmental disability. Our Project SEARCH program is embedded in HSC Winnipeg, where our students complete a classroom component while completing three internships. SCE LifeWorks - an NPO that supports people with developmental disabilities to work in the community - is the organization that coordinates Project SEARCH in Winnipeg (and is the hiring organization).

Project SEARCH HSC Winnipeg is in search of a Skills Trainer - Term . Anticipated employment start date is ASAP (January start; possibly a few days orientation December 2024), concluding June 30, 2025 (with potential for renewal).

Skills Trainers work in a variety of work environments within HSC Winnipeg. Duties include providing work experience training & task analysis support to students. We are looking for a candidate who is :

  • Excited about the prospect of working in a hospital and all its various settings : medical, warehousing, retail, clerical, etc. We value Skills Trainers with their own varied work history, as they draw from that experience regularly.
  • A team player. We have a small team and our best work happens when we collaborate.
  • A fast and eager learner. A great Skills Trainer identifies skills that would benefit a student, is required to pick up new learning quickly and translate that into targeted training for the student. Skills Trainers are always learning and teaching, and must be comfortable in both roles.
  • A strong and confident communicator. Skills Trainers communicate with the team, students and all levels of hospital staff, school contacts, and Department of Families staff.
  • Comfortable with technology. Skills Trainers use MS Office / Google Suite daily in correspondence, creation of task lists / tools for work, and in supporting students in the classroom. Skills Trainers may also be required to learn and train students to use various software programs as part of their internship.
  • Empathy and positivity. Skills Trainers are supporting people through various stages of learning. A positive, empathetic approach to coaching has the best result.
  • Adaptability. A great Skills Trainer handles change with creativity and a can-do attitude.
  • Experience supporting people with intellectual disabilities and / or autism is preferred. More general experience supporting anyone who faces barriers to community inclusion and successful employment would be acceptable.
  • Human services degree or equivalent combined education & experience is preferred.
