Job Title : Mud Plant Operator

Department : Project Execution

Reporting to : Site Supervisor

Job Purpose and Objectives

The Operator will be part of the operations team responsible for the safe, technical, and economical operation, maintenance and set up of the Separation Plant.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Following all Bothar Policies
  • Mud plant equipment setup
  • Working knowledge of a closed slurry system, circulation times and volumes
  • Operate, and maintain the separation plant, annular lubrication pumps, centrifuges and drilling fluids system
  • Follow the provided mud program and communicate to TBM operators and Site supervisor of any changes possibly required within parameters of mud program based on geology
  • Mix up slurry / lubrication Bentonite
  • Perform effective fluids and solids control, recycling and disposal
  • Keep inventory of all mud product onsite reporting usage to Site supervisor
  • Ensure all SDS's are available at mud plant for mud product
  • Identify consumable or wear parts at mud plant and keep stocked through site supervisor
  • Monitor and record separation plant equipment and tank volumes
  • Participate in daily site safety meetings, and shift crossover meetings
  • Load and unload trucks
  • Assist with equipment maintenance and troubleshooting
  • Effectively identify type and volume of cuttings coming off shaker communicating to TBM operator
  • Taking cuttings samples and recording chainage and time
  • Complete required mud checks
  • Complete set up and pre drill check lists noting any deficiencies to Site Supervisor
  • Operation of boiler during winter conditions
  • Ensure proper safety precautions taken when working at mud plant
  • Mobile Equipment Operation
  • Recording cuttings being removed offsite
  • Communicating any variances in cuttings volumes to TBM operator, Foreman, and site supervisor
  • Assisting site team with pipe prep and day to day site activities

  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule format
  • Fluid management (slurry suspensions / mud plants)
  • The ability to determine the necessary tools for assigned tasks
  • The ability to troubleshoot a problem based on experience and applicable trade knowledge
  • Working at heights and confined space experience

    Physical Demand

  • While performing the duties of this job, requirements include prolonged standing, walking and / or sitting.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Computer / control station work is required which will involve visual focus on screens and documents.
  • Manual dexterity required to handle / feel objects, tools, and controls.
  • Required to climb stairs and / or ladders, balance, stoop or kneel and / or walk on uneven ground.
  • Regularly required to lift and / or move up to 75 pounds.
  • Ability to hear equipment alarms, voices, radio transmissions, and other noises consistent with construction sites.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions, inside and outside.
  • Capability to work in confined spaces is required
  • Working day and night shifts including holidays
  • Pass pre-employment physical
  • Qualifications

  • Experience with separation plant equipment (shakers, centrifuges, pumps etc.)
  • Exposure to Direct Pipe and / or Microtunneling technology is an asset
  • Boiler operation experience with valid ticket
  • Relevant work experience with Mircrotunnel Boring Machines and trenchless technology is an asset
  • Certification - CWB certification would be an asset
  • The following safety tickets are required :
  • o WHIMIS, First Aid, CSTS or PCST, Confined Space Entry and Rescue, Fall Arrest / Fall Protection

    Other Relevant Information

  • This position is assigned to field locations during operations. Hours of work may vary, including night shifts based on project schedules.
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada.
  • Pre-employment Drug and Alcohol clearance is required
  • Must be fluent in English (written and spoken)
