SCO is a growing and dynamic regional First Nation organization that represents 33 Anishinaabe and Dakota Nations and more than 88,000 citizens in what is now southern Manitoba. Established in 1999 by the Chiefs, SCO is mandated as an independent organization to protect, preserve, promote, and enhance First Nation peoples’ inherent rights, languages, customs, and traditions through the application and implementation of the spirit and intent of the Treaty-making process.

OVERVIEW :

Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer, the Human Resources Director will be responsible for assessing and developing Human Resources (HR) strategies, overseeing HR services, and ensuring compliance with employment laws and regulations while upholding a healthy workplace culture.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Manage and direct HR personnel, ensuring effective execution of HR functions and providing guidance as required.
  • Work collaboratively with the senior management team to develop, implement, and monitor human resource strategies to build on positive corporate culture.
  • Coach and advise senior managers on HR policy, best practices, and employment standards to help guide decision making.
  • Provide advice on performance evaluations, learning plans, career development plans, employee performance, and resolution of interpersonal issues, and oversee coaching.
  • Develop and implement corporate plans for key HR areas, including compensation, benefits, health and safety, and employee well-being.
  • Assess, enhance, and ensure consistent application of HR policies, processes, and performance management systems.
  • Oversee HR compliance and risk management.
  • Establish and maintain strategic relationships across the organization to support collaboration and alignment.
  • Undertake initiatives to promote and measure employee engagement and retention through coordination of employee surveys, employee recognition, etc.
  • Prepare monthly and annual HR reports to monitor key metrics and inform decision-making.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Completion of post-secondary education in Human Resource Management and Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation.
  • Eight to ten years of experience in Human Resources leadership and administration including developing human resource functions and processes and managing staff.
  • Proven experience across all areas of human resources with a strong focus on talent strategy including recruitment, retention, training / development and performance management.
  • Expert knowledge of Employment Standards, Labour Relations, Workplace Safety and Health, Human Rights Legislation including Child and Family Services Sector.
  • Experience working with or for First Nations or First Nation organizations.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a high level of attention to detail.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Fluency in the Anishinaabe or Dakota language an asset.
  • OTHER REQUIREMENTS :

  • Current and satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check, and current and clear Child and Adult Abuse Registry Checks.
  • Valid Manitoba driver’s licence and access to a vehicle as travel is at times required.
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • The candidate must be a member in good standing with their regulatory body.
