The Strategic Communications Advisor reports to the Manager, Corporate Communications and Executive Engagement. The advisor works closely with executive, senior management and staff to increase the quality of communications and the flow of information to key corporate stakeholders and through the corporation to enable engagement and a positive experience.
This position assesses, develops and implements proactive strategic communications plans and products and cultivates relationships with internal clients and corporate stakeholders. Key functional responsibilities include : professional writing and editing services including the preparation of corporate reports, presentations and other documents; coordination of information requests, communications counsel; communications planning and support; issues identification and management; and managing contracted services. This position is responsible for integrating these components into a responsive, efficient and effective communications framework and infrastructure capable of responding to Pension Corporation's needs.
Hybrid Work Model
This position is located in our Victoria, BC office. You will have the opportunity to work part of the time on-campus and part of the time off-campus. Guidelines and requirements for in-office presence are determined by operational need and vary according to the unique needs of each business area.
Responsibilities
1. Contributes to, develops and executes the Plan Boards' strategic communications :
Assesses and compares the likely impact of the strategic communications plans and associated risks, mitigation strategies, stakeholder response, liability and other implications. Outlines advantages / strengths and disadvantages / weaknesses of each to ensure that the Pension Corporation and its clients have the necessary information to make informed decisions.2. Serves as a trusted communications advisor to pension plan trustees, plan board Executive Directors, Pension Corporation executive and senior staff :
Provides advice and guidance to pension plan trustees, Plan Board Executive Directors, as well as the Pension Corporation's executive senior staff regarding communications plans, techniques, approaches, methodologies and strategies to accomplish objectivesDevelops and / or directs development of speeches, articles, presentations, annual reports and other communications materials in support of executive and pension plan trustees and plan board Executive DirectorsConducts communications research including reviewing media reports, legislation, policies, reports and background information in order to analyze and develop options, strategies and approaches using techniques such as cost benefit analysis, social and economic impact analysesPrepares a range of communications and resource materials including : policy / position recommendations, briefing documents, correspondence, speeches, newsletters, information packages related to key objectives of the Pension Corporation and its clients;Provides project management and technical leadership for the research, writing and production of a range of communications, promotional products such as brochures, news releases, publications, fact sheets, and media advisories.3. Plans, coordinates, and implements media relations, social media and issues management strategies and services :
Reviews and identifies emerging and controversial issues and develops strategies for response in conjunction with plan board Executive Directors, management and executiveHelps prepare responses to media issues and recommends strategies / responses to senior stakeholders to deal with media and public concerns and inquiriesPrepares senior staff and plan trustees for media interviewsConducts public issues forecasting, media monitoring and content analysis, analyzing public perceptions and stakeholder concerns and maintains up-to date on issues with potential to impact the corporation and its clientsPrepares, produces and distributes news features, media releases, brochures and other publicationsIdentifies potential issues, problems and conflicts and recommends course of action to resolveDevelops strategies to minimize negative impact of sensitive issuesMakes budget recommendations for media and communications projects.4. Oversees and manages campaigns and projects on behalf of the Pension Corporation and its clients :
Plans internal and external communications programs and creates content for special eventsCo-ordinates public education / consultation process and information gathering / responses to improve awareness and understanding of corporate and pension plan initiativesAttends and represents the corporation at meetings with key stakeholder groups.5. Reviews, analyses and disseminates complex information :
Uses understanding of pension administration rules and principles to analyze information requirements for members and employers and provides expert communications adviceUses judgment in the interpretation of complex pension information, pension plan rules and relevant legislation; translating technical language into business or plain language writing style to assist clients' understandingDevelops and implements planning principles, best practice guidelines, evaluation criteria and professional communications standards for quality assurance.Qualifications
Must have :
Bachelor's degree in a related field (Communications, Journalism, English, Public Relations) is required. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
Five years of experience is required in the following :
Professional experience in communications, public relations, media relations, journalism or a related fieldDemonstrated program or project management experience in a communications role, including activities such as planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating success of communications activitiesDemonstrated experience providing advice to senior organizational stakeholders on high profile, strategic and / or sensitive issuesDemonstrated experience and ability to prepare and draft a variety of communication materials including corporate communications plans, annual reports, communications and media relations strategies, issue papers, policy or guidelines, correspondence, speeches, reports and presentation materials.Nice to have :
Demonstrated experience in producing corporate events is preferred.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Considerable knowledge of general communications principles, concepts and methodologies including issues management, social media strategies, media relations and media productionExcellent oral and written communication skills; ability to write clearly for news organizations, speeches and presentationsStrong interpersonal skills to work in a team environmentAbility to communicate by providing and obtaining information in a timely manner, and at an appropriate level and format, while maintaining confidentialityAbility to assess audience needs to produce audience-appropriate communicationsDemonstrated ability to plan, organize, establish priorities and deliver results on timeAbility to multi-task with precise attention to detailMust be self-motivated and independent, able to work with a minimum of supervision and to work well with staff at all levels.Application requirements
