As the Director, Digital at Definity, you will partner with business leaders to reimagine what digital insurance is and, through the efforts of your team of engineers and analysts, bring those desired experiences to life through :

  • Sharing in-depth knowledge of digital technologies to support creation of modernized platforms and products that align with Definity’s strategy.
  • Leading contributions to the body of standards and governance of Definity’s digital ecosystem such as inner- sourcing of shared frameworks, design systems, and microservices design
  • Engaging regularly with senior and executive leadership in advocating, informing, and influencing our evolving digital strategy
  • Leading a team of talented team of Web and Mobile Developers focused on deep collaboration with product owners, architects, and business leaders to deliver the future of digital insurance.
  • Mentoring peers and developers in a full stack digital development, with an exceptional ability to problem solve, troubleshoot, and evolve your skillset as technology and business needs evolve.
  • Operationalizing and supporting Definity’s digital ecosystem leadership ambition through the adoption of leading agile, SRE (Site Reliability Engineering), and observability practices.
  • This role can be based out of our Kitchener or Toronto location.

What do you bring to the role?

  • University Degree in computer science, information systems, or a related discipline
  • 7+ years of digital design and development experience
  • 5+ years in a leadership role in software delivery / engineering
  • 4+ years in Personal and Commercial (P&C) Industry with a proven track record of architecting, developing, and maintaining Digital assets.
  • Experience in the Guidewire back-end eco system and integration patterns with Digital and mobile layer.
  • Understanding of Usage Based Insurance (UBI) implementation within the P&C industry.
  • Experience of working in Hybrid delivery models including Agile ways of working and distributed delivery teams.
  • Understanding and the ability to teach good design and architecture principles and non-functional requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing the production-level solution in a medium to large enterprise.
  • Demonstrated advanced technical expertise in the following technologies :
  • Must haves :

  • NodeJS and supporting frameworks.
  • Angular, React, HTML5, and CSS3
  • Relational databases (Oracle / MySQL / PostgreSQL) and key / value
  • store databases (Redis, DynamoDB)
  • Other expertise which will be an asset :

  • Microservices architecture and frameworks such as Spring Boot
  • REST API Development
  • AWS or Azure cloud-native application development and SDLC
  • Bootstrap as a core web framework
  • A good understanding of :

  • Atlassian toolset including Bitbucket, JIRA, and Confluence
  • Design-driven architecture
  • Code testability, build pipelines, docker and CI / CD systems
  • ELK / AppDynamics for monitoring and logging
  • SRE (Site Reliability Engineering) concepts
  • Leadership skills :

  • Identify and scope technical priorities and collaborate with product owners on shaping requirements in the product backlog.
  • Act as a technology lead and mentor for engineers\developers in the team
  • Promote quality in all aspects of the team’s technical deliverables.
