Job description

Associate Technical Director, Roads and Highways

North Vancouver, Edmonton

Regular, Full-Time

Hybrid

Do you want to be a key leader at one of the premier engineering consulting firms for bridge and transportation infrastructure in Canada? Can you be a major Seller-Doer in the transportation sector - positioning COWI as technical experts and leaders in the industry? And are you a demonstrated and respected leader in the industry? Join us and help shape the next chapter of COWI’s transportation business in Canada.

Lead with a team of experienced leaders

In this role, you will be challenged to work on some of the most advanced transportation projects in North America, working collaboratively with our respected network of technical leaders across the globe, delivering innovative solutions.

We have an exciting opportunity for a professional to join our highly skilled team of specialists as an Associate Technical Director, Roads and Highways, to provide engineering and project management leadership on transportation projects. Your primary mandate will be to build and develop highway/roadway design capabilities in British Columbia and Alberta (including roadway and highway geometric design, traffic modelling and coordination of civil disciplines). You will guide technical teams to deliver the roadway scope across our varied transportation projects and help advance the company’s business development efforts, with Success. As a member of the Canadian Leadership Team, this position will support the growth of the Canadian business.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Act as Professional of Record and/or Coordinating Professional of Record for transportation projects, assuming professional responsibility for design outputs and engineering decisions related to roadway/highway and geometrics design.
  • Serve as Civil Design Manager and lead roadway design scope within major transportation projects, ensuring delivery on schedule, within budget, and to quality targets.
  • Lead business development efforts and proposals related to road and highway projects.
  • Define project scope, objectives, deliverables, and engineering fees in collaboration with the project manager, clients, stakeholders, and internal teams during the bid phase of projects.
  • Develop and sustain collaborative relationships with key clients to help expand roadway and transportation services in Canada.
  • Assist with developing a strategy to develop COWI’s capabilities in transportation.
  • Provide technical mentorship, coaching, and guidance to engineers, designers and technicians.
  • Build a team of roadway and associated civil engineers and technicians to support this sector.
  • Represent COWI in external settings, such as technical committees, conferences, seminars, professional bodies, and business groups, as they pertain to transportation projects.

You will be a part of the Canada Leadership team and will:

  • Participate in strategy meetings to contribute to COWI Group's strategic priorities.
  • Contribute to developing COWI’s business in Canada so that COWI North America reaches and/or exceeds its strategic targets.
  • Facilitate team collaboration by providing leadership and guidance to project team members while promoting a culture of teamwork and innovation.
  • Support recruitment and staff development aligned with business needs.
  • Serve as an ambassador for COWI’s values.

Your skills. Our team. Together we design the future

Like us, you believe that leadership growth comes from setting a clear and meaningful direction for your team and supporting them in taking ownership of their work. You always delegate responsibility and ensure an open and safe dialogue, and you coach your people to achieve their aspirations through constructive, fact-based feedback. Attracting and nurturing a diverse group of high-potential team members is at the top of your agenda, as is creating an inclusive, caring, and trusting culture in your team.

On top of that, you will have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Transportation Engineering.
  • A registered Professional Engineer license (P.Eng.) in BC and/or AB. A PE license in the USA is considered an asset.
  • A minimum of 15 years of experience working on multidisciplinary transportation projects
  • Acted as Professional of Record for roadway design on transportation projects for the BC Ministry of Transportation and Transit, or Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors. Experience as a Coordinating Professional of Record is considered an asset
  • Demonstrated experience in delivering transportation projects across all phases, including feasibility studies, conceptual design, detailed engineering and engineering services during construction.
  • Expertise in geometric design (TAC, provincial standards, BC MOTT, ATEC, etc.)
  • Knowledge of design software (Civil 3D, OpenRoads, MicroStation, AutoCAD, etc.)
  • Qualified in the BC MOTT eRISP system in the Highway Design categories, or have been able to qualify by having completed three BC Ministry projects within the previous 5 years or 5 municipal or highway projects with other agencies within the previous 7 years
  • Good business development and client relationship management skills.
  • Effective communication, negotiation, and leadership skills.
