Position Summary :

The Department of Medicine and the Division of Cardiology at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute is looking for a full-time academic cardiologist at the assistant or associate professor level with a clinical and academic focus on Heart Failure and Transplantation.

The successful applicant would join a group of 50 cardiologists at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI). UOHI is a large tertiary centre providing cardiovascular care to Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec. The University of Ottawa Heart Institute is Canada’s largest and foremost heart health centre. It employs over 1,400 physicians, nurses, researchers, technicians, allied health professionals and more. The Institute handles more than 235,000 patient visits yearly from across Canada.

In addition to state-of-the-art catheterization (4) and electrophysiology (4) labs, a dedicated cardiac imaging facility with PET, MRI, CT, SPECT and echocardiography imaging, core facilities include 96 inpatient ward beds, an intensive cardiac care unit (ICCU) with 14 beds, an intensive cardiac surgery unit (CSICU) with 27 beds, a Day Unit with 36 beds, a Reference Centre with 11 beds and a Structural Procedure Unit of 6 beds.

The Division is renowned for delivery of outstanding cardiac care, excellence in education at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels (recognized as a leading training program in Canada and internationally) and recognized internationally for its research in particular in electrophysiology, cardiac imaging, STEMI / ACS coronary intervention, valvular disease, cardiac transplantation and pulmonary hypertension programs among others as well as strength in heart failure and structural interventions.

Responsibilities :

The successful applicant would join a group of 5 advanced heart failure doctors, comprising the service at UOHI. The applicant would be expected to provide in-patient ward service and consultations for heart failure patients one week in 5, provide on call service for advancedHF / transplant and LVAD patients one week in 5, participate in advanced HF / transplant and LVAD out-patient clinics at least 1.5 days per week, possible participation in echo lab and / or cath lab (right heart catheterization and myocardial biopsy), and participate in teaching medical students and residents and fellows.

The licensing path for U.S. trained physicians has recently been simplified, and full details are available here : CPSO - Practising in Ontario : Information for U.S.-Trained Physicians

Why choose Ontario?

Streamlined licensing pathways - U.S. physicians certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties are eligible for licensure without additional certifications or examinations.

Lowest membership fees - Ontario has the lowest regulatory membership fee among all Canadian provinces.

Efficient & timely registration - CPSO is committed to quick and transparent processing, ensuring a smooth transition for physicians looking to practice in Ontario.

Candidates must be a member of, or be eligible to be a member of, the Canadian Medical Protective Association, and have, or be eligible for, licensure in Ontario.

Candidates must have a strong academic interest (either teaching / research or quality improvement) and have experience teaching medical students and residents. Practice profile will be negotiated based on expected academic and clinical deliverables. Academic appointment ranking will be based on qualifications and experience however, we are targeting applications from those who qualify for Assistant Professor or above.
