Job description

The LPN assists in planning, coordinating, and providing nursing services that best meet the needs of the residents in accordance with Company standards and policies, ensuring positive human relations with staff, residents, families, and the larger community.

LPNs are committed team players, with a passion for providing exceptional service and support, have an empathetic and respectful approach and great attention to detail, paying attention to the ‘little things'.

Objective :

Lead the provision of high-quality standards as they relate to the health and wellbeing of residents of The Berkeley.

Provide Nursing Care to residents :

  • Administer medication, including dressings and treatments, and transcription of doctor's orders, re-ordering of medication.
  • Observe and document any changes in residents' condition and communicate these changes to the General Manager / Resident Care Coordinator.
  • Keep informed on all prescribed medication and monitor safe keeping of medication.
  • Comply with the Code of Ethics, the Acts & Regulations of the N.S. College of Nursing.
  • Take a leadership role, while working in conjunction with other members of the Health Care Team, to provide effective and appropriate standards of care for all residents.
  • As necessary, use clinical and problem-solving skills to assess residents and confer with Resident Care Coordinator / General Manager regarding need for personal care services.
  • Ensure the continuity of care through the documentation of significant data.

Supervision & Training :

  • Promote The Berkeley CARE Standards to all employees in their daily encounters with residents.
  • Promote Company Standards, Conduct and Expectations.
  • Take an active role in continuous quality improvements.
  • Participate in training, in-services, and meetings as required.
  • Will assume many of the General Manager / Resident Care Coordinator responsibilities during absences.
  • Health, Wellness, Safety :

  • Follow established procedures in Health and Safety, complying with all applicable laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Promptly report to the General Manager, any unusual occurrences, illness, or unexpected behaviours of residents.
  • Participate in resident and employee programs, ie : JOHSC, Fire Safety, WHMIS.
  • Follow OHS regulations regarding the reporting and correcting of unsafe conditions.
  • Minimum Requirements / Certifications

  • The LPN is required to be registered with the association of Nova Scotia College of Nursing.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of health care practices
  • Previous experience in a retirement residence setting.
  • Supervisory experience
  • First Aid and CPR certificates
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and listening skills
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment and to manage when times are slow
  • Empathy for, and an understanding of older adults, aging in place and cognitive impairment
  • Positive attitude and the ability to build relationships
  • Patient and friendly with demonstrated experience in problem solving
  • Flexibility to work various shifts and locations, as required
