Forestry and Parks is responsible for managing our forests, public lands and provincial parks. Our Ministry accountabilities include :

  • Growing Alberta’s environmentally responsible wood products and forestry sector
  • Protecting Alberta’s forests from wildfire
  • Preserving our provincial parks for the recreation and enjoyment of Albertans
  • Enabling access to public lands for recreation and purposes while prioritizing conservation
  • Managing public lands and balancing sustainable rangelands and grazing leases for Alberta producers
  • Within the Ministry, Land Operations Division delivers an integrated approach to the management of provincial Crown Land. The work of the Division reflects the full range of users of the province’s Crown land, including conservation, recreation, tourism, energy, forestry, agriculture and traditional land uses.

    Reporting directly to the local Field Supervisor, the Recreation Technician plays a critical role in preserving public safety, protecting environmental resources, and maintaining recreation infrastructure. The position supports safe and sustainable recreational experiences on Public Land through regular inspections and infrastructure repairs. The role is field-based and a Recreation Technician must be physically fit, able to hike long distances, carry loads of up to 25 kg, and work comfortably in remote locations under all weather conditions. The position may also require extended periods of up to four days or more working from remote field camps.

    Key Responsibilities

  • Adhere to Occupational Health and Safety policies, procedures, and protocols (e.g., daily hazard assessments, vehicle / equipment inspections)
  • Assist with the construction, installation, or maintenance of recreation infrastructure such as trails, bridges, boardwalks, culverts, signs and kiosks
  • Collect data, capture geospatial information, and conduct inspections of recreation sites and trails
  • Communicate information to the public and other stakeholders on recreation access, responsible use of Public Land, and rules related to Public Land Use Zones
  • Operate power tools and heavy equipment (e.g., chainsaws, brush saws, tractors, skid steers, and excavators)
  • Operate off-highway vehicles (OHV) such as quads and side‑by‑side
  • Load trailers and haul material, equipment, OHVs, or heavy equipment to site
  • Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on vehicles and equipment
  • Clean up garbage, remove structures, or abandoned trailers and vehicles

  • Blairmore : Livingstone and Porcupine Hills Public Land Use Zones
  • Calgary : Kananaskis Country and Ghost Public Land Use Zones
  • Nordegg : David Thompson Country and Bighorn Backcountry Public Land Use Zones

  • Qualifications

    Minimum Requirements

  • A completed high school diploma plus up to 12 months of related experience.
  • Equivalencies may be considered on a one‑for‑one basis.
  • Additional Requirements

  • A valid Class 5 Driver’s License
  • A valid Standard First Aid certificate with CPR Level C and AED certification
  • Current Defensive Driving Certificate
  • Physically fit and able to safely carry up to 25 kg
  • Related Experience

  • Outdoor recreation, resource management, or environmental studies
  • Trail building, landscaping, carpentry and / or construction
  • Backcountry navigation and working in adverse weather conditions
  • Digital data collection (e.g., ArcGIS Field Maps, Avenza)
  • Chainsaw safety certificate (e.g., Woodlands Trainers Association Levels 1, 2 or 3)
  • ATV / UTV training

  • What We Offer

    Wage employees receive 11.6% in addition to regular wage earnings in lieu of paid holidays and vacation leave :

  • 5.6% of regular wage earnings instead of paid holidays
  • 6% of regular wage earnings instead of annual vacation pay
  • Shift differential and opportunity to work overtime, evening, and weekend shifts
