Your Opportunity :

As the Vivarium Director at UTSC, you will report to the Associate Vice-Principal of Research & Innovation - Research Facilitation and Infrastructure, with a dotted line to the Director, Office of the Vice-Principal, Research and Innovation.

You will lead and manage the day-to-day operations of the campus vivarium and animal care program to support academic and research missions. Main responsibilities include :

  • Oversee of vivarium operations, management of finances and resources, ensuring compliance with all relevant regulatory standards.
  • Apply animal care and research technical skills to support on-the-floor activities and serve as back-up for CUPE / USW roles in the facility.
  • Perform and oversee training of faculty, staff, and students, ensuring conformity of all users with Provincial and Canadian Council of Animal Care (CCAC) standards.
  • Liaise with the University Regulatory Veterinarian, Vivarium Managers / Directors at other campuses across the University, researchers, and other staff to communicate any vivarium-related issues and support university committees in campus-wide animal research initiatives.
  • Participate in university committees that support campus-wide animal research initiatives.

Qualifications Required :

I.EDUCATION :

Graduation from a recognized Veterinary Technology program or equivalent combination of education and experience and Canadian Association of Laboratory Animal Service (RLAT-Registered Lab Animal Technologist / Technician) certification.

II.EXPERIENCE :

A minimum six (6) years of experience of involvement in management and operational oversight of an animal research facility. Experience leading and managing staff, preferably in a unionized environment. . Experience in change management and strong decision-making ability to effectively lead others through organizational change. Experience developing, implementing and maintaining an animal care program within a research / academic environment. Experience with CCAC and Provincial standards is required. Experience with Biosafety Level II materials, quarantine procedures, and the maintenance and operation of state-of-the-art rodent and fish facilities. Experience working with and interpreting policies and procedures pertaining to animal care and animal care legislation. Experience providing and developing hands-on animal training (e.g., CL2, anesthesia, surgical, facility orientations, equipment). Extensive experience working hands-on in an animal facility. Experience guiding facility inspections (e.g., CCAC, LACC, and OMAFRA). Proven expertise in financial management with a strong ability to oversee and administer operational budgets effectively.

III.SKILLS :

Solid computer skills (i.e. Adobe, MS Office Suite Word, REDcap, Excel) including experience utilizing cloud-based systems (e.g., online calendar booking systems, SharePoint, shared mailboxes). Experience with cage washer, bottle filler, autoclave, anesthetic machines, biological safety cabinets, housing equipment (rodent, fish, birds, etc), water-treatment systems, building automation systems, surgical and necropsy equipment, etc. Advanced technical skills required for supporting vivarium operations (e.g., husbandry, cage wash, and animal procedures such as injection, anesthesia, aseptic technique, euthanasia). Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. Strong presentation skills for purposes of training, guiding, and presenting information. Excellent time management skills and effectiveness in developing and implementing animal training programs.

IV.OTHER :

Excellent administrative and proactive planning and organizational skills. Strong leadership including the ability to motivate and encourage initiative in staff and students and to develop cooperative, collegial working relationships with a broad range of University constituencies. Demonstrated judgment, problem-solving and decision-making employing both tact and negotiation skills. Discretion and confidentiality in dealing with sensitive information. Proven ability to apply vivarium and animal care and research concepts to develop plans and implement strategic plans and renovation projects. Proven ability to influence others to confirm with regulations set out by CACC and the Province.
