Job description

Position Overview

Do you want to shape exceptional user experiences and lead impactful research initiatives for innovative, cross-functional product teams? As a Senior Experience Researcher at Autodesk, you will play a pivotal role in our team, focusing on delivering user-centered insights that inform and enhance our products and services.

Reporting to the Director of Experience Design, Visualization, the Senior Experience Researcher will define and elevate the research strategy for visualization experiences across Autodesk’s platforms. This is a senior, system-level role focused on shaping experience direction through rigorous inquiry, not just validating features.

You will partner with UX, Product, and Engineering to uncover the needs, behaviors, and constraints shaping design and make workflows. The work spans foundational research, evaluative studies, and industry synthesis to guide product direction, inform experience architecture, and raise the quality bar for human-centered design across teams.

Autodesk is advancing flagship products such as AutoCAD, Revit, and Forma through cloud-native architecture, scalable data, AI-driven capabilities, and high-fidelity visualization. Visualization Solutions sits at the core of that shift, delivering consistent, modern graphics and interaction across web, mobile, and desktop. This role ensures those experiences are grounded in evidence, aligned to real-world practice, and cohesive across the platform.

The role will require top-notch research skills, along with a strategic mindset and the ability to collaborate with global teams across the company. The ideal candidate must also be able to influence stakeholders through strong partnerships.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain partnerships with product, data, and experience leaders to inform product and design decisions.
  • Independently design and deliver mixed-methods research programs that support the product lifecycle, from early discovery to post-release validation.
  • Employ a wide range of research methods to drive product and organizational impact, including contextual inquiry, diary studies, interviews, formative and summative usability studies, and quantitative methods, such as surveys and data analytics.
  • Lead research for complex, cross-functional product areas, adapting approaches to shifting priorities and evolving business needs.
  • Collect, analyze, and synthesize data from diverse sources, using empirical and statistical methods, to derive actionable insights and provide clear recommendations to decision-makers.
  • Design and facilitate workshops and sessions for idea generation, strategic decision-making, and alignment on research insights.
  • Communicate research findings and recommendations effectively, using compelling storytelling to influence and build credibility with diverse audiences.
  • Drive user engagement initiatives, including participant recruitment, feedback collection, and ongoing relationship management.
  • Contribute to the development of research best practices, frameworks, and tools to support the organization’s research maturity.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 5+ years in User Experience Research preferably in an enterprise environment similar to Autodesk.
  • Proven ability to independently design and execute complex research studies using mixed or multi-method approaches.
  • Demonstrated experience with co-creation and participatory design research, including one-on-one and group sessions.
  • Up-to-date toolkit of qualitative and quantitative research methods and tools, and the experience to determine the appropriate approach for each situation.
  • Strong analytical skills, with experience synthesizing and visualizing complex data into clear, actionable insights.
  • Experience building partnerships and influencing product, design, engineering, and analytics teams.
  • Solid understanding of human-centered design principles and practices.
  • Excellent communication and storytelling skills, with the ability to build credibility and trust across teams.
  • Experience aligning research with both product delivery and strategic objectives.
  • University degree in Psychology, Social Science, Interaction Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related/equivalent field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with using online diary platforms and co-creation techniques.
  • Experience working alongside data scientists to combine behavioral and attitudinal insights into a holistic narrative.
  • Experience facilitating workshops and working groups with extended team members and customers.
  • Openness to iterating on research practices and contributing to organizational research maturity.
  • Deep empathy for users and skill in finding patterns and opportunities in complex domains.
  • Experience in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry.

Top Signs You’re a Great Fit

  • Your communication and storytelling skills are top-notch, allowing you to build credibility and collaborate with ease.
  • You have a proven track record of designing and executing complex research studies using mixed methods.
  • You can navigate complex problems and environments.
  • You’re collaborative, enjoy partnering, sharing, and bringing your team along with you.
  • You're open-minded and experimental, always willing to try new approaches and methodologies.
