We’re recruiting for a summer student to help our province achieve big things!

The Building Services Group at the Department of Public Works supports Nova Scotia’s 2,400 buildings and infrastructure assets across a wide range of clients. We maintain and support various government buildings and other built assets, including museums, core buildings and office buildings supporting the work of government, correctional centres, and justice centres.

About Our Opportunity

As the Building Technician Student in Sydney, you will support the operations at the Sydney Provincial Building, 360 Prince St, Sydney.

In your role, you will receive training and mentorship from highly qualified public service professionals. This is the perfect opportunity to jump start your career and gain an understanding of the provincial government.

Primary Accountabilities

You will assist the Building Operator in a wide range of duties and have the opportunity to:

  • Complete maintenance tasks for HVAC, heating/cooling, and fire suppression systems;
  • Complete minor carpentry, electrical, and mechanical repairs;
  • Assist with the operation and monitoring of Building Automation Software; and
  • Perform occasional basic lawncare and landscaping duties, along with light moving of furniture and equipment.

Qualifications and Experience

You are a student currently enrolled in a Power Engineering Technology program or the Building Environmental Systems Program (BES) or an acceptable trade such as plumbing, electrical and Instrumentation along with the Power Engineering program. You must also be returning to school in the fall (or in the next applicable semester for the education program).

Travel is a component of this position; you must have a valid driver’s license and access to a reliable motor vehicle. Please include a copy of your current driver’s abstract with your application.

As the ideal candidate you have a keen interest in the operation and maintenance of commercial and institutional buildings. You also:

  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of electrical, fire suppression and HVAC systems;
  • Have the ability to read and interpret various specifications and drawings;
  • Are familiar with safe work practices, Occupational Safety General Regulations, and the Occupational Health and Safety Act; and
  • Are eager to learn and collaborate with various staff and clients.

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions

This is a labor-intensive opportunity requiring physical strength and dexterity. At times, you are subject to various environmental and temperature extremes.

Additional Information

This opportunity will start approximately May 18, 2026 with an end date of August 28, 2026.

The student will be required to successfully pass a criminal background check for this position.
