Your opportunity :
Residing in the Office of the Vice Dean, Medical Education, the Office of Learner Affairs (OLA) is dedicated to working with and supporting learners from the Temerty Faculty of Medicine’s undergraduate medical education (MD and MD / PhD), Postgraduate Medical Education, Medical Radiation Sciences, Physician Assistant, and Occupational Therapy, Speech Language Pathology and Physical Therapy programs to optimize the learning environment and experience at individual and systems levels, and enable learners’ development into health care professionals.
As the Lead Career Counsellor, you will provide individual and group career counselling services to Undergraduate and Graduate medical trainees across all three UofT campuses, who are diverse in age, culture, race, gender, sexual identity, and educational background. You will develop career resources and establish collaborative networks with University of Toronto and external career development / counselling agencies in order to help ensure that our learners are well positioned and prepared for progression through the continuum of medical education and into medical practice. As the Lead, you will direct the activities of a small group of staff and be a key contributor to developing and implementing new programs and initiatives. Utilizing your strong advising, problem solving, andleadership skills, you will help advance the mission and vision of OLA.
Your responsibilities will include :
- Advising students on career-related matters (i.e. interview skills, developing goals, work search, program transfer etc.) by providing options and consequences incorporating personal circumstances impacting academic success and an understanding of an individual’s background; Applying self-assessment exercises, vocational assessments, non-directive and other career counselling techniques
- Building and strengthening relationships with stakeholders and partners of strategic importance
- Screening and making referrals to academic advising and learning skills programs and other resources or services for students in distress; Responding to escalated complaints using informal negotiation skills
- Developing and implementing new programs and initiatives independently, including developing content for instructional workshops and facilitating educational workshops and seminars; Developing plans that support and enhance career services program visibility
- Conducting a detailed analysis of student feedback and learning outcomes to inform program planning activities; Planning and overseeing the implementation of an evaluation framework for programs and initiatives
- Keeping well informed on labour market, occupational and educational work trends and theories related to equity, diversity and inclusion
- Analyzingcomplex statistical reports and / or financial information for important decision-making
- Directing the activities of a small group in a limited area and providing feedback on performance
