Master of Speech-Language Pathology (MSLP) Clinical Coordinator

Primary Purpose and Nature of the Work: The Master of Speech-Language Pathology (MSLP) Clinical Coordinator reports directly to the Academic Lead Clinical Education and Community Affairs (ALCECA) of the School of Rehabilitation Science (SRS) and works closely with the other SRS Clinical Coordinators to develop and administer all aspects of the Speech-Language Pathology clinical education program, while additionally providing supports to the Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy clinical education programs. The MSLP Clinical Coordinator works with a range of individuals in the University and community at large, which includes the professional clinical health care delivery sector and other community partners. In addition to being knowledgeable in SLP practice and basic clinical education processes in SLP, the individual requires excellent communication, relationship building, and negotiation skills. In the absence of the ALCECA, the Clinical Coordinators collectively take on the responsibilities of the ALCECA.

Typical Duties or Accountabilities:

MSLP Clinical Education Administration

  • Determine availability of clinical placements within Saskatchewan
  • Collaborate with provincial clinical facilities and programs to identify placement options
  • Arrange, organize and ensure diverse mix of clinical placement experience for each student in the speech-language pathology program
  • Evaluate individual practice settings to determine their ability to provide high quality placements
  • Collaborate with clinical partners, other SRS clinical coordinators, and other national speech-language pathology academic clinical coordinators in determining availability of clinical placements, provincially and nationally
  • Administer out of province clinical education placement requests, including affiliation agreements, specific requirements and prerequisites for placements
  • Prepare clinical placement schedules and clinical placement information for speech-language pathology students and clinical facilities in collaboration with other SRS clinical coordinators
  • Prepare information to reinforce or improve the SRS’s clinical policies, procedures and guidelines, clinical course objectives, and evaluation forms
  • Collaborate to ensure that policies, procedures, and guidelines related to clinical education are consistently applied and enforced
  • Collaborate to review speech-language pathology student clinical performance evaluations and preparation of final grade reports
  • Support new clinical education pilot projects that promote high quality, innovative clinical education experiences for students
  • Monitor the participation of clinical facilities and programs in the clinical education program on an ongoing basis
  • Participate in components of clinical education teaching within the SRS programs
  • Promote the use of Information Technology (IT) resources with clinical instructors and contribute to clinical education content development ( online clinical performance instrument, clinical practice course materials, videoconference workshops/seminars and meetings)
  • Undertake regular communication with faculty, staff, and key stakeholders including clinical administrators responsible for clinical education programming
  • Promote the University of Saskatchewan and the School of Rehabilitation Science programs to the external environment where appropriate

Resource Materials and Reports

  • Develop, update, and distribute clinical education resource materials for students and clinical instructors
  • Update clinical education policies, procedures, and guidelines in collaboration with the ALCECA
  • Prepare clinical education reports for internal purposes including program accreditation, strategic planning, SRS meetings, etc.
  • Respond to external requests for information regarding clinical courses including: the U of S President’s office, provincial student loan program, etc.
  • Participate in Master of Speech-Language Pathology (MSLP) program planning, review and evaluation, and in the other SRS programs as requested
  • Other duties as determined by the ALCECA and/or MSLP Program Chair and/or SRS Director

Communication

  • Educate and counsel students regarding clinical education placements
  • Develop and deliver clinical education (including orientation) for students and clinical instructors
  • Communicate with clinical instructors and students regarding clinical placement performance issues
  • Maintain clinical education files/student records
  • Evaluate the clinical education program through various mechanisms including communication with clinical instructors/administrators and students
  • Ensure appropriate clinical agreements are established with facilities/programs and that University/SRS policies and procedures are communicated
  • Participate in the planning, development, promotion and implementation of continuing education workshops
  • Produce continuing education resources related to clinical education models and methods

Committees

  • Represent the MSLP Program &/or SRS on relevant University working groups/committees: Clinical Education Advisory Committee (Member) Clinical Practice Courses Sub-committee (Member) Canadian Academic Coordinators of Clinical Education (CACCEC) (Member) School of Rehabilitation Science Faculty Council (Member) Other committees as assigned in collaboration with the ALCECA, SRS Program Chairs and SRS Director

Academic Involvement

  • Participate in components of clinical education teaching within the MSLP and other SRS programs
  • Engage in ongoing evaluation and development of clinical education courses
  • Support Interprofessional Education (IPE) initiatives in collaboration with faculty and staff from other education programs
  • In collaboration with the ALCECA, participate in components of academic teaching within the MSLP or other SRS programs where interested and where capacity permits

Education: Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology

Licenses/Memberships:

  • Current full practicing license as a Speech-Language pathologist with professional liability insurance
  • Member in good standing with a provincial Speech-Language Pathology regulatory body

Memberships:

  • Eligible for membership with Speech-Language and Audiology Canada (SAC)

Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a registered SLP
  • Previous experience as an SLP preceptor/clinical instructor
  • Teaching experience in an SLP education program and/or academic leadership related to clinical education and/or post-professional qualifications, relevant training and/or a graduate degree are considered assets

Skills:

  • Comprehensive foundation in speech-language pathology practice
  • Competency in adult education theory and evaluation
  • Effective communication, organizational, interpersonal, problem-solving, and counseling skills
  • Current knowledge and skill in the use of information and computer technology ( word processing, spreadsheets, database management, communication programs, etc.)
  • Knowledge of legislative, regulatory, legal, and practice issues affecting clinical education, students, and the profession of speech-language pathology
  • Ability to work independently and to coordinate work with colleagues and peers
  • Ability to travel, as required
