Senior Digital Control Systems Engineer

Position Overview
The Senior Digital Control Systems Engineer provides advanced engineering expertise in the design, troubleshooting, and optimization of Digital Control Computer (DCC) systems and real-time process computing environments. This role supports system reliability and performance, delivers technical leadership on assigned projects, and contributes to the development and maintenance of high-integrity software and control system solutions.
The engineer works both independently and within multidisciplinary teams, providing technical oversight, mentoring junior staff, and ensuring adherence to engineering governance, safety standards, and quality assurance requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Design & Technical Problem-Solving
Develop, modify, and support Digital Control Computer hardware / software and related real-time process computing systems.
Diagnose system issues, implement corrective solutions, and provide expert-level troubleshooting support.
Real-Time Software & Controls Engineering
Define software requirements and develop high- and low-level software, including ladder logic, advanced algorithms, automated scripts, and system utilities.
Create, execute, and document test cases to validate system performance and functionality.
Perform functional analyses, software classification, and software quality assurance activities.
System Optimization & Monitoring
Conduct system performance assessments and implement enhancements to ensure high reliability, safety, and operational efficiency.
Provide ongoing monitoring and support for real-time control and data processing systems.
Governance, Procedures & Documentation
Maintain, update, and ensure compliance with operating procedures, technical governance, and departmental standards.
Prepare technical reports, analyses, and engineering recommendations.
Project & Procurement Support
Prepare technical specifications, requisitions, and evaluation criteria for materials, services, and equipment.
Support procurement activities, review vendor proposals, and provide engineering oversight during installation and commissioning.
Develop spare parts recommendations for new or upgraded systems.
Team Leadership & Coordination
Provide periodic supervision of technical staff, assigning tasks, reviewing work, and offering guidance and mentorship.
Collaborate with internal stakeholders and external organizations to coordinate engineering activities and meet project objectives.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Computer, Electrical, or related discipline).
Minimum 6 years of progressive engineering experience, specifically in Digital Control Computing or Real-Time Systems.
Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in Ontario, or eligible for licensure.
Strong understanding of engineering governance, software development processes, and procedural compliance.
Demonstrated ability to analyze complex issues, apply sound engineering judgment, and work with minimal supervision.
Proven teamwork skills with the ability to manage interactions across internal and external groups to support project execution and stakeholder alignment.
