Job description

Grounded in safety, quality, and ethics, our experts lead their fields with dedication, a creative spirit, and a vision for growth. We draw from more than 20 technical specialties worldwide and are devoted to fostering a community of diverse talents, backgrounds, and expertise. Here, you can apply your passion and collaborate with top environmental professionals on work that’s vital to our clients and the communities they serve.

Join a team that’s naturally committed to the environment.

Your Opportunity

At Stantec, our mine water work sits at the intersection of complex hydrology, environmental protection, and responsible resource development. In Atlantic Canada, that complexity is amplified—high‑precipitation climates, legacy mine sites, sensitive receiving environments, and evolving regulatory expectations create challenges that demand experienced, thoughtful leadership.

We are seeking an Atlantic Discipline Leader for our Mine Water practice to shape, grow, and lead our mine water services in Atlantic Canada, with a particular emphasis on surface water and integrated mine water management. This role is designed for a senior practitioner who wants more than project delivery—someone motivated to help build a practice, mentor people, influence standards, and leave a lasting professional legacy.

You will serve as both a technical authority and a people-focused leader, working closely with Mining, Environmental Services, and Business Centre leadership to define how mine water services are delivered today—and how the next generation of practitioners is developed for tomorrow.

Stantec has an opportunity for an Atlantic Discipline Leader for our Mine Water practice to join our Environmental Services team in Atlantic Canada. The position may be based in Halifax, Fredericton, St. John’s, or other regional offices, with flexibility depending on candidate location.

The successful candidate will provide leadership and technical direction for mine water management services across all phases of mining projects—from exploration and environmental assessment to operations, closure, and long-term monitoring.

This role will focus on:

Practice Leadership and Strategic Growth

  • Serve as the technical and strategic lead for mine water management across Atlantic Canada, helping define service offerings, technical focus areas, and growth priorities

  • Shape how Stantec approaches surface water management, mine water balances, and integrated water systems in high‑precipitation and cold‑climate environments

  • Partner with leadership to support strategic pursuits, key client relationships, and long‑term practice growth

  • Contribute to the development of technical standards, guidance documents, and best practices that elevate consistency, quality, and innovation across the business

  • Act as a visible technical ambassador for Stantec through industry involvement, presentations, and thought leadership

Technical Authority and Project Influence

  • Provide senior technical leadership for mine water management across all project phases: - Environmental assessment and permitting

  • Feasibility and detailed design

  • Operations support and optimization

  • Closure and post‑closure water management

  • Lead and review site‑wide water balances, surface water diversion systems, contact water management strategies, and adaptive management frameworks

  • Act as a senior advisor on ARD/ML prediction, mitigation, and long‑term water quality management

  • Serve as Technical Lead, Discipline Lead, Subject Matter Expert, or Senior Reviewer on complex and high‑profile mining projects

  • Support clients in navigating provincial and federal regulatory requirements with clear, defensible, and practical water management strategies

Mentorship: Core Part of the Role

Developing people is central to this position.

  • Actively mentor intermediate and senior mine water professionals, supporting both technical depth and professional confidence

  • Coach emerging practitioners in surface water fundamentals, integrated mine water thinking, and practical decision‑making

  • Foster a culture of knowledge sharing, technical curiosity, and continuous improvement

  • Support succession planning by helping identify, develop, and prepare future technical leaders

  • Provide informal and formal guidance through project work, technical reviews, and one‑on‑one mentorship relationships

  • Help create an environment where early‑career professionals are challenged, supported, and inspired to stay and grow

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership in mine water management for mining projects throughout Atlantic Canada.

  • Lead development and review of integrated water balance models tailored to maritime climatic conditions.

  • Oversee design and evaluation of water management infrastructure including diversions, ponds, pumping systems, and treatment facilities.

  • Support clients in meeting provincial and federal regulatory requirements, including watercourse alteration permits, industrial approvals, and environmental assessment commitments.

  • Provide expertise in ARD/ML prediction, prevention, and management strategies.

  • Support operational mines with compliance strategies, adaptive management, and water performance optimization.

  • Identify and support strategic mining pursuits in collaboration with regional Business Leaders and Account Managers.

  • Strengthen Stantec’s presence in Atlantic Canada through industry engagement, technical presentations, and client relationship development.

  • Mentor and develop mine water professionals within the region.

  • Contribute to technical standards, best practice guides, and innovation in mine water modeling and treatment technologies.

  • Participate in key project delivery as Technical Lead, Discipline Lead, Subject Matter Expert, or Quality Reviewer.

  • Support resource planning and workload balancing within the regional team.

  • Promote a strong health and safety culture, particularly for remote and seasonal field programs.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Strong understanding of mine water management challenges specific to Atlantic Canada.

  • Experience with ARD/ML assessment and mitigation in base metal, precious metal, and critical mineral projects.

  • Demonstrated experience developing and managing mine water balances in maritime and winter climates.

  • Knowledge of provincial regulatory frameworks in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland and Labrador.

  • Experience with mine water treatment technologies is considered an asset.

  • Proven leadership of multidisciplinary technical teams.

  • Strong project management skills including budgeting, proposal writing, scheduling, and client engagement.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
