Sinai Health is looking for a Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) to support our Acute Care Psychiatry Services, including the Psychiatry Emergency Service and Urgent Outpatient Care in the Department of Psychiatry at our Mount Sinai Hospital Campus
The CNS, having a specialty based focus in mental health and addictions care, will function in an expanded nursing role demonstrating a high level of autonomy and expert skill to promote best practices that will support quality care for patients with mental illness and substance use disorders presenting in the Emergency Department (ED) and in acute outpatient clinics . As a member of the inter-professional team, the CNS will work with Physicians, Nurses and Health Discipline Professionals to support our Acute Care Psychiatry Services, including the Psychiatry Emergency Service and Urgent Outpatient Care in the ED, as well as outpatient urgent care follow up.
About this team
Our Psychiatry Emergency Service team provides timely, expert assessment and treatment planning for individuals experiencing mental health or addiction-related crises in the fast-paced environment of the Emergency Department. We work collaboratively to stabilize acute symptoms, ensure patient safety, and develop comprehensive care plans that address the complex needs of our patients. Following initial intervention, our interprofessional Urgent Aftercare Service seamlessly continues to provide time-limited follow-up support, connecting patients with vital resources and ensuring continuity of care to promote ongoing recovery and well-being.
In this role you will :
Provide proactive consultation, triage, assessment, crisis intervention, brief counselling and disposition planning for patients with mental health and addictions challenges, often combined with complex medical diagnoses in an ED setting
Utilize and demonstrate a comprehensive theoretical knowledge base and advanced level of clinical competence in caring for patients with psychiatric illness and addictions challenges in an ED and Urgent Outpatient Care setting
Promote and support the maintenance of safe patient care and work environment encompassing a trauma-informed care approach through the implementation of best practices (i.e. crisis intervention, delirium care, least restraint and code white optimization, etc)
Demonstrate leadership and collaboration in the establishment of goals and objectives, procedures, program development and evaluation consistent with the provision of high quality patient care with a focus on staff experience
Interpret and foster the philosophy, goals and standards of the Department of Nursing
Deliver, coordinate and participate in education and professional development activities / programs, coaching and mentoring of inter-professional team members and performing activities to further develop and strengthen the nursing profession and care for patients
Assume a leadership role, leading quality activities and administrative duties including committee involvement
Act as a resource and serves as a consultant to individuals and groups within the professional community
Support the achievement of departmental goals
Develop linkages within Sinai Health and the community including community services and organizations to enhance continuity of care for patients
Develop and maintains standards of nursing practice and the management of patient care through the creation of an environment conducive to growth and development of staff
Collaborate on scholarly activities and initiates evidence based practice
Perform other duties consistent with the job classification, as required
Job Requirements
Job Requirements : Mandatory
Successful completion of a master’s degree in nursing or related field from an accredited academic institution
Current certificate of registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)
3-5 years of recent and related nursing experience required with emphasis on mental health and addictions
Preferred
Preference will be given to candidates with relevant certification in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing
Membership in RNAO or other organizations relevant to role
