The Director, Risk Data & Governance is responsible for the strategic direction and overall management of data across the Global Risk Management organization. The Director will lead a team of data professionals, working collaboratively with risk, technology, and business stakeholders to design, implement and continuously improve a robust risk data ecosystem to support effective portfolio management practices, regulatory compliance, and business decision-making.
Is this role right for you? In this role, you will:
- Strategic Leadership and Vision:
- Develop and implement a comprehensive risk data strategy aligned with the institution's overall risk appetite and strategic goals.
- Establish the vision for the risk data function, driving innovation in the use of data and analytics for risk management.
- Provide thought leadership on data governance and management best practices, emerging technologies, and regulatory requirements.
- Data Governance and Quality:
- Implements controls in adherence to the Policies, Standards, related regulations and procedures for risk data
- Implement data quality controls and monitoring mechanisms to ensure accuracy, completeness, and consistency of risk data.
- Manage data lineage, metadata, and data dictionaries to ensure traceability and understanding of risk data.
- Manage data quality issue management processes to ensure proper risk data-related issues identification, monitoring and resolution
- Champion a culture of data quality and data-driven decision making across the organization.
- Data Management and Infrastructure:
- Oversee the design, implementation, and maintenance of risk data infrastructure, including databases, data warehouses, and data lakes.
- Collaborate with technology teams to ensure systems and infrastructure support the requirements of the risk data function.
- Team Leadership and Management:
- Recruit, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of risk data professionals.
- Foster a collaborative and innovative team environment.
- Set performance objectives, conduct performance evaluations, and provide feedback.
- Project Management:
- Manage risk data related projects from inception to completion.
- Develop project plans, monitor progress, and address issues.
- Stakeholder Management and Collaboration:
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders across the organization, including risk, compliance, technology, and business units.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to define their data needs, categorize data based on criticality and ensure the risk data function delivers value.
- Regulatory Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with all relevant regulatory data management requirements in Canada.
- Innovation and Continuous Improvement:
- Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement changes to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the risk data function.
- Explore new technologies and data methodologies to improve data quality, analytics capabilities, and overall performance.
Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? We'd love to work with you if you have:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, Business, or a related field. Master's degree preferred.
- 10+ years of progressive experience in data management, risk management, or a related field within the financial services industry.
- 5+ years of experience in a leadership role, managing a team of data professionals.
- In-depth knowledge of risk management principles, practices, and methodologies.
- Strong understanding of data governance principles, data quality management, and data architecture.
- Experience with agile development methodologies (e.g., Scrum, Kanban).
- Proficiency with data management tools and technologies (e.g., SQL, databases, data warehouses, data lakes, data visualization software).
- Experience in developing and implementing data governance policies and procedures.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
- Excellent leadership, collaboration and influencing skills.
- Knowledge of Canadian financial regulations and compliance requirements (e.g., OSFI guidelines, Basel accords).
- Experience with cloud-based data platforms is an asset.
- Strategic thinker with a strong understanding of risk management principles, data governance best practices, and with the understanding of the regulatory landscape for financial institutions in Canada
