SMS Equipment is currently recruiting Heavy Equipment Technicians to join our growing Timmins branch and support the construction side of our business. This is a resident position based in Kap/Hearst, Ontario; candidates must currently live in the area or be willing to relocate. In this role, you will inspect, troubleshoot, repair, service, and maintain excavators, loaders, dozers, mini excavators, and other construction equipment, helping ensure safe and reliable operation for our customers.

We’re looking for individuals who take pride in their work, enjoy solving complex mechanical challenges, and are comfortable supporting customers wherever their equipment is working. You may complete repairs at customer locations, contractor or mine sites, roadside locations, construction sites, remote bush locations, or in a service bay at our Timmins shop. If you’re committed to safe, high-quality work and enjoy variety in your day, we encourage you to apply.

Base Wage: $50.26 - 55.84 per hour based on certification + premiums*
Location: Kap/Hearst, Ontario
Rotations: Straight days: 5 days on / 2 days off (8-hour shifts)

Premiums may bring total compensation to approximately $60.65 - 66.61 per hour depending on schedule. Additional assignment-based allowances may apply.

What You'll Do

  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, service, and repair mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic systems on excavators, loaders, dozers, mini excavators, and other construction equipment
  • Perform preventative maintenance, component overhauls, and new equipment builds
  • Use both digital diagnostic tools and hands-on troubleshooting techniques
  • Work independently or collaboratively at customer locations, contractor and mine sites, roadside and construction sites, remote bush locations, in the shop yard, or in a service bay
  • Follow established safety procedures and actively contribute to a culture of safety
  • Maintain accurate service records and documentation
  • Adapt to changing service locations and working conditions while safely supporting customer and contractor equipment in the field or at the Timmins shop

What You Bring

You are a heavy equipment professional who takes pride in your work and is committed to safe, high-quality outcomes. You bring strong problem-solving skills and enjoy diagnosing and resolving complex equipment issues. You’re comfortable working both independently and as part of a team, and you adapt well to different environments, including field-based settings.

  • Certified Journeyperson Heavy Equipment Technician or a minimum of 7,000 hours of heavy equipment experience and willing to challenge the certification exam within the next 6 months
  • Experience maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing construction equipment such as excavators, loaders, dozers, and mini excavators
  • Valid Class G driver’s license and willingness to travel as required
  • The ability to use a variety of diagnostic tools and approaches to troubleshoot issues

Assets:

  • Experience with Komatsu, BOMAG, Takeuchi, or similar construction equipment brands
  • Interprovincial Red Seal certification

This position is classified as an Individual Contributor role in SMS Equipment’s competency framework, requiring demonstration of core competencies (customer focus, collaboration, and technical/functional expertise).
