Our energy expertise in the oil and gas sector comprises the entire value chain - upstream, midstream, and downstream; and in the power sector includes thermal, nuclear, waterpower, renewable, hybrid, transmission and distribution, and grid modernization. Join our vision of a low-carbon world and help make positive change!

This is a technical leadership position within the eGRID business of Hatch. It provides an opportunity for professional growth to the selected individual within the System Performance and Planning department by engaging in business development and marketing, team building, working on systems analysis investigations and planning / feasibility studies for clients in North America and around the world. The selected candidate is expected to lead and mentor a group of transmission and distribution planning / studies engineers globally. The incumbent will also work closely with the HVdc / FACTS department of PD&I on HVdc and FACTS studies, and with the Management Consulting group of Hatch particularly for development of power sector master plans.

The incumbent of this position is required to work within focused study teams and multi-disciplinary teams involved in integrated power system plans, transmission and distribution system plans, pre-feasibility / feasibility / system impact assessment and system performance studies for both ac and dc project developments and generation / load connections. He / she will coordinate all planning activities and those of their teams to maintain project schedules and ensure successful project completion. Client engagement, business development and proposal management are essential elements of the role. The person will perform the duties in accordance with all applicable codes and standards, including all of Hatch’s policies and procedures, such as Safety, Environmental and Quality Assurance. The incumbent should be familiar with NERC / FERC policies, guidelines, regulations, requirements and criteria as applicable to network performance and planning, especially to bulk power systems. Knowledge and experience of relevant requirements in different NERC Regional Reliability Councils and other jurisdictions will be an added advantage.

  • Review of planning / system performance studies for compliance with prevailing standards and criteria and good engineering practice
  • Preparing comprehensive reports on the conduct of the studies, the study results and appropriate conclusions and recommendations
  • Prepare and deliver presentations to clients
  • Project Management
  • Mentoring and developing junior engineers within the department
  • Maintaining close coordination with other relevant Hatch Business Units and Practices for cross-selling and cross staffing opportunities.
  • Undertake thought leadership activities (e.g. speaker at conferences, panelist, whitepaper, etc.) and promote Hatch’s know-how in the Power and T&D sector in the region.

Qualifications

  • A degree in Electrical Engineering; preference will be given to candidates with post-graduate (Master or PhD) degrees in Power System Planning

  • Intimate familiarity with EMT software, such as PSCAD, and experience in both AC and DC system studies. Experiences in EMT studies for generation and transmission, renewable energy, battery storage, and HVDC and other power electronic and inverter-based resource (IBR) systems. Although the position will require a certain level of hands-on operation of the software, the leader must be able to train / mentor junior / intermediate users and carry out QA reviews. Knowledge of other EMT type of applications, including RTDS, EMTP, is optional but desirable.
  • Familiarity with the PSSE software package, including all modules for load-flow, short-circuit and transient stability analysis, and including understanding of batch programming using PYTHON. Knowledge of alternative planning software applications, including DSA Tools, PSLF or DigSilent.
