Job description

Department / Unit

Marine Affairs Program

Location

Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada

About the opportunity

The Marine Affairs Program at Dalhousie invites applications for a Dalhousie Diversity Faculty Award (DDFA) hire to join our transdisciplinary teaching and research community. The DDFA program is a recruitment initiative designed to increase the number of faculty members from historically underrepresented groups. The program was introduced in 2011 in partnership with the Dalhousie Faculty Association and augmented through collective bargaining. The position is full-time and tenure-track or tenured at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level. Note that these positions are designated to candidates who self-identify as members of one or more of the following groups : Indigenous Peoples of Turtle Island (especially Mi’kmaq), persons of Black / African descent (especially African Nova Scotians), members of other racialized groups, persons with disabilities, women, and persons identifying as members of 2SLGBTQIA+ communities.

Established at Dalhousie in 1986, MAP Faculty currently deliver a 16-month Master of Marine Management (MMM) degree program in addition to developing and leading their own individual programs of research. Current Faculty lead and supervise cutting-edge applied marine management research, with a particular emphasis on aquaculture, fisheries, ocean equity, coastal access, and co-governance.

We welcome applicants who are interested in transformative transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary applied marine management research and teaching with expertise in one of the following or related areas of study : climate adaptation, blue economy, marine resources, marine energy, maritime commerce and transportation, coastal development, Indigenous knowledge systems, Indigenous rights, marine biodiversity conservation, marine spatial planning, ocean access and human health, and biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction. Applicants with an integrative approach and strong demonstration of, or potential for, collaboration across fields and faculties are especially encouraged to apply.

As a DDFA scholar in the Marine Affairs Program, the ideal candidate will clearly demonstrate four main attributes :

  • Demonstration of, or potential for, excellence and engagement in providing rich and rewarding learning experiences to students, evidence of pedagogical innovation;
  • Demonstration of, or potential for, excellence and impact in developing and conducting trans and interdisciplinary marine management research programs;
  • Demonstration of, or potential for, relevant and impactful outreach and service activities at scales appropriate for the research program; and
  • Demonstration of commitments to uphold principles of inclusivity, equity, diversity, and accessibility; demonstrations of collegiality and collaboration.

Applications from all qualified candidates will be considered. Candidates with a PhD at time of application will be preferred, but we will also consider applications from those in the final stages of their doctoral work. As an applied program, we value diverse forms of scholarship, research, and teaching beyond academic credentials, and therefore encourage applicants to share these qualifications in their application packages. In addition, the impact of certain circumstances that may legitimately affect a nominee’s record of research achievement will be given careful consideration when assessing the nominee’s research productivity. Candidates are encouraged to provide any relevant information about their experience and / or career interruptions.

The successful candidate will have a normal teaching load of three courses. Courses will included required courses currently offered, as well as the opportunity to develop an elective in line with the research expertise and interests of the successful candidate. The candidate will also be expected to contribute occasional guest lectures or modules to other courses. Additional teaching will be negotiated related to program-level needs, for example around sabbatical and parental leaves.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority. Salary of the successful applicant will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Anticipated start date is July 2025.

A complete application consists of :

  • Cover letter (max 2 pages);
  • Current Curriculum Vitae;
  • Summary of research excellence and / or proposed program of work, including most significant research contributions and demonstration of outreach / impact (max 2 pages);
  • Statement of teaching philosophy and interests, demonstration of teaching excellence and pedagogical innovations (max 2 pages);
  • Statement describing past and planned activities supporting commitments for inclusivity, equity, diversity and accessibility in the classroom, engagement with graduate students, research program, and at the institutional level (max 1 page);
  • Contact information for three potential references.
  • Applications must be submitted through the Dalhousie People Admin site, and will be accepted until November 25, 2024 . We anticipate interviewing long-listed candidates online in early December, and short-listed candidates early in the new year.

    Dalhousie University commits to achieving inclusive excellence through continually championing equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility. In keeping with the principles of Dalhousie’s Employment Equity Plan, this position is designated to candidates who self-identify as members of one or more of the following groups : Indigenous Peoples of Turtle Island (especially Mi’kmaq), persons of Black / African descent (especially African Nova Scotians), members of other racialized groups, persons with disabilities, women, and persons identifying as members of 2SLGBTQIA+ communities. In accordance with our Employment Equity Policy, preference will be given in hiring processes to candidates who self-identify as members of one or more of the equity-deserving groups listed above.
