Job description

Radiation Therapist

Regular, Full-time (1.0 FTE), BC Cancer

Hours of Work : Monday to Friday; 0700-1500, 0800-1600, 0830-1630, as operations require

Multiple locations - Abbotsford, Kelowna, Prince George, Surrey, Vancouver, and Victoria

Temporary positions AND 4-month temporary positions may be available at select centres

The Radiation Therapist provides radiation services and patient care in accordance with established policies and standards of professional practice for radiation therapy. Provides radiation services through treatment planning, delivery, and follow-up. Provides patient care such as assessment and patient and family education related to planning, treatment, and side effects.

What you’ll do

  • Provide patient care by performing duties such as patient assessment, reviewing patient and family history, educating patients and families on treatment process and side effects, and recommending self-care measures.
  • Consult with and / or refer patients to members of other health care disciplines as required.
  • Perform treatment planning procedures by :

Constructing immobilization and beam directional and shaping devices.

  • Using simulation and related equipment for the generation and verification of treatment plans.
  • Positioning and marking patient to ensure optimal dose distribution & reproducibility of treatment plan.
  • Performing manual and computerized planning calculations for radiation treatment techniques.
  • Review, interpret, and implement radiation treatment prescriptions for brachytherapy and external beam radiation therapy, including computerized treatment plans, use of immobilizing and beam modifying devices, and accurate dose calculations. Maintain accurate treatment records.
  • Assist the patient in the interpretation of the treatment plan and evaluate the patient’s understanding of treatment and side effects.
  • Ensure that patients and their families are aware of services available at BC Cancer and in the community.
  • Maintain patient records by collecting and documenting information related to the patient and health care history, radiation therapist assessment, symptom and side effect management, and patient and family education.
  • Perform quality assurance checks of equipment in the assigned work area according to established procedures, maintain records of checks, and take appropriate action on equipment malfunctions.
  • Maintain a safe environment for patients, families, and staff by adhering to safety policies, standards, and emergency procedures.
  • Update own clinical knowledge and skills in Radiation Therapy through reviewing professional literature, consulting with other professionals, and participating in relevant education programs. Develop a plan for professional development in collaboration with designated personnel / team and review progress to ensure goals are achieved within established time frames.
  • What you bring

    Qualifications :

  • Degree in Radiation Therapy or recognized certificate and CAMRT certification. Within the last five (5) years, successful completion of a Radiation Therapy training program or active employment as a Radiation Therapist.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the impacts of settler colonialism and systemic racism on Indigenous Peoples within social and health contexts. Commitment to addressing Indigenous-specific racism and all forms of discrimination impacting equity-deserving groups within healthcare. Familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and Humility, recognizing personal biases, engaging in anti-racism education, and advocating for systemic change.
  • Knowledge of legislative obligations and provincial commitments such as the TRC Calls to Action, In Plain Sight, BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act, UNDRIP, and related frameworks.
  • Core Competencies :

  • Understanding of Indigenous-specific and systemic racism, with initiatives to create a safe and inclusive environment informed by Indigenous Cultural Safety.
  • Awareness of social, economic, political, and historical realities affecting Indigenous Peoples, addressing anti-racism and Indigenous cultural safety.
  • You have :

  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills, verbal and written, with patients, families, staff, physicians, and other healthcare providers.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team.
  • Physical ability to perform job duties.
  • Capacity to work independently, prioritize workload, and apply clinical and technical knowledge.
  • Operate related equipment and demonstrate CPR skills.
  • Commitment to ongoing learning about Indigenous-specific racism, dismantling oppression, and sharing knowledge to foster a motivated and inclusive culture.
  • Foundational knowledge of social determinants of health and legislative commitments, with a dedication to ongoing education on these topics.
