Purpose of Role:
Hudbay is seeking qualified candidates to apply for a new Manager, Government Relations role to be based in our downtown Toronto Corporate office (located at 25 York Street). The purpose of this role is to lead and execute the Company’s government relations strategy to drive effective relationships with the federal and provincial governments, with a strong focus on the federal government.
Key aspects of the role include executing an effective government relations strategy by building relationships with key government officials and influencing public policy, supporting the business units with provincial government relations efforts, monitoring legislative and regulatory developments and providing timely updates/recommendations to senior management, developing materials for government meetings and managing external consultants.
Role Accountabilities:
- Execute federal government relations strategy – develop and execute an effective government relations strategy to build trusting relationships with key federal government officials. Utilize strong government relationships to influence public policy aligned with the Company’s corporate objectives and enhancing critical minerals growth. Develop materials for use with governments with a focus on effective and consistent messaging. Prepare and brief senior management team members in advance of government engagement meetings.
- Manage engagement with external lobbying consultants – manage external lobbying firms, as needed, to support the execution of our government relations strategy. Leverage external expertise to help develop effective messaging and coordinate government engagement activities.
- Coordinate provincial government relations efforts with the business units –support business units with provincial government relations activities to supplement local engagement efforts and align with the unique opportunities/goals for each business unit.
- Monitor legislative and regulatory developments – ongoing monitoring of legislative and regulatory developments and provide timely updates to senior management team and Board regarding policy insights, legislative updates and developments that are relevant to the Company.
- Represent Hudbay at industry events – represent the Company at key public forums, including government roundtables, industry conferences and panels.
- Other tasks – support executives and cross-functional teams with government-related inquiries, in addition to other duties as assigned.
Skilled Knowledge:
Experience needed to perform job accountabilities well:
- Minimum 5 years of experience in government relations, public affairs, public policy or political roles
- A university degree or post-graduate diploma in political science, public administration, public policy, or business
- Existing government contact network
- Strong knowledge of the process involved in influencing the development of government policies/legislation
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to address key government issues, develop strategy, and persuade constituencies
Other experience considered an asset:
- Knowledge of mining industry or natural resources sector
- A legal degree
- Bilingual proficiency in English and French (spoken and written)

Travel:
10% to 15% travel – meetings in other cities, site visits and industry conferences, as needed.
Compensation:
- Expected Compensation: Base salary $143,000 - $179,000 CAD per year.
