Job description

Next Horizon is here. Fueled by investments in talent and technology, our bold strategy to transform is nearly complete.

At Gore Mutual, we’ve always set ourselves apart as a modern mutual that does good. Now, we’re proudly building on that legacy to transform our company—and our industry—for the better.

Our path forward sharpens our focus on business performance, driven by leading technology, innovation and an agile, high-performing culture. With Gore Mutual and Beneva announcing their intent to merge in 2026, we’ll be uniting two well-established, financially strong, and trusted brands to become the strongest mutual insurer in Canada, ensuring Canadians have purpose-driven insurance options for generations to come. Come join us.

The Commercial Property Adjuster is essential to Gore Mutual's success, acting as a safeguard of both customer trust and financial stability. This role demands a blend of meticulous investigation, collaborative problem-solving, and decisive action within defined guidelines. Adjusters independently manage a portfolio of primarily commercial property claims, navigating a spectrum of complexity. Their mission is to investigate, evaluate, negotiate, and settle these claims, always adhering to company protocols and regulations. By thoroughly assessing losses, determining accurate coverage, and efficiently resolving claims, they contribute directly to Gore Mutual's bottom line. Beyond technical expertise, the adjuster's focus on delivering a positive claims experience with policyholders, further strengthening the company's reputation. This role offers a unique opportunity for growth within a supportive team environment, where individuals can hone their commercial property claims expertise and lay a solid foundation for career advancement within the organization.

Job Responsibilities :

  • Claims Investigation and Assessment Conduct thorough and timely investigations of commercial property losses, including site visits, interviews, and analysis of relevant documentation. Gather evidence to determine cause of loss, scope of damage, and applicable coverage. Document findings accurately and clearly in the claim file. Collaborate with experts (engineers, contractors, etc.) as needed to assess complex losses.
  • Coverage Determination and Reserve Setting Analyze policy wordings and endorsements to determine coverage applicability and set accurate reserves based on investigation findings. Apply knowledge of commercial property insurance principles and legal requirements. Consult with senior adjusters or underwriters for complex coverage issues. Regularly review and adjust reserves as new information becomes available.
  • Negotiation and Settlement Negotiate fair and equitable settlements with claimants, balancing customer satisfaction with cost containment for Gore Mutual. Explain coverage decisions clearly and professionally to claimants. Utilize effective negotiation techniques to reach mutually agreeable settlements. Escalate complex or high-value settlements to senior adjusters or management as appropriate.
  • Customer Service and Communication Provide exceptional customer service throughout the claims process, maintaining open and transparent communication with all stakeholders. Promptly respond to inquiries and provide regular updates on claim status. Explain claims processes and procedures to policyholders and brokers. Build rapport and trust with claimants to facilitate a positive claims experience.
  • Risk Mitigation and Continuous Improvement Identify trends and potential risks related to commercial property claims, contributing to ongoing risk mitigation and process improvement efforts. Participate in post-loss reviews and team discussions to share insights and lessons learned. Identify opportunities to streamline processes and enhance efficiency. Stay informed about industry developments and regulatory changes that may impact claims handling.

What you need to Succeed :

  • Post Secondary education is preferred.
  • 3-5 years of property claims adjusting experience.
  • Experience with commercial insurance policies :  Familiarity with the nuances of commercial property coverage, including business interruption, builder's risk, and equipment breakdown.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle moderately complex claims :  Experience with claims involving multiple parties, technical issues, or higher financial values.
  • Customer service experience :  Proven ability to communicate effectively with claimants, brokers, and other stakeholders in a professional and empathetic manner.
  • CIP designation is nice to have.
  • Hybrid :   We are a hybrid organization and thrive off in person collaboration, this role requires 2 days per week in our Cambridge, Toronto, or Vancouver office.
