Job description

The Rotman Research Institute, Vice President, Scientific Affairs

Baycrest Academy for Research and Education

Founded in 1918 as the Toronto Jewish Old Folks Home, Baycrest is a global leader in residential living for older adults, healthcare, research, innovation and education, with a special focus on brain health and aging. Baycrest is home to a robust research and innovation network, including one of the world’s top research institutes in cognitive neuroscience, the Rotman Research Institute; the scientific headquarters of the Canadian Consortium on Neurodegeneration in Aging, Canada’s largest national dementia research initiative; and the Baycrest-powered Centre for Aging + Brain Health Innovation, a solution accelerator focused on driving innovation in the aging and brain health sector.

The Rotman Research Institute (RRI) is a premier international centre for the study of human brain function, with a special focus on aging and the brain. Founded in 1989, the RRI’s scientists, staff, and trainees have supported Baycrest in becoming Canada’s #1 most research-intensive hospital, with scientific foci in four primary areas consistent with its home on the campus of Baycrest Seniors Care : sensory and cognitive neuroscience, computational neuroscience and neuroinformatics, aging and brain health, and Alzheimer’s and related dementias. The RRI is fully affiliated with the University of Toronto, and houses several research centres and programs, including the Anne and Allan Bank Centre for Clinical Research Trials, the Kimel Family Centre for Brain Health and Wellness, the RRI Research Training Centre, and the Ben and Hilda Katz Inter-Professional Research Program in Geriatric and Dementia Care.

Baycrest is seeking our inaugural Vice President, Scientific Affairs – a key member of the senior leadership team, playing a pivotal role in supporting Baycrest’s vision to create A world where every older adult enjoys a life of purpose, inspiration and fulfillment.

Reporting to the President and Chief Scientist of Baycrest Academy for Research and Education (BARE), the VP Scientific Affairs provides strategic and operational leadership to the Rotman Research Institute (RRI), one of two major divisions within the Baycrest Academy for Research and Education, in the areas of research and research training. The VP works collaboratively with other members of the BARE senior management (President, Vice-Presidents, Executive Directors) to ensure organizational-wide policies, priorities, and strategic initiatives are developed and aligned with the BARE’s mission, vision, values, and strategic plan. The incumbent is also expected to hold the Reva James Leeds Chair in Neuroscience and Research Leadership as a Senior Scientist in the RRI, conducting their own, independent line of research in a field consistent with the research goals of the RRI.

As the ideal candidate, you are a respected scientist in the areas of aging and / or brain health. You are a credible and respected scientist and collaborative people leader who excels at managing, enabling, and mentoring teams. You have demonstrated capabilities leading growth and change in a collaborative, inclusive fashion. You have experience commercializing and generating new funds in a similar environment and understand the importance of building trusting relationships with those that you will be leading. You have a deep understanding of research, research methodologies, grant writing and research administration and have an MD or PhD in a field relevant to the research mission of the RRI. Additionally, the VP must be a Senior Scientist or Senior Clinician Scientist, or eligible for such appointment and must hold a status appointment at the Associate Professor or Full Professor level in the appropriate Faculty at the University of Toronto or be eligible to hold such an appointment.
