Job descriptionEnsure safety by supervising the safe passage of pedestrians, particularly children, at crossing locations. Encourage safe behaviour to all pedestrians at school crossings and observe and report any incidents or conditions that present a potential safety hazard. Inform motorists, by the appropriate signals, that pedestrians are using or are about to use the cross‑walk. Exercise constant care to prevent injury and accidents. Practice courtesy and patience when interacting with school‑aged children and the general public. Must be able to perform duties in all types of weather. Perform other related duties as required. Experience as a crossing guard is a definite asset. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Able to stand outdoors for up to one and one‑half hours in any type of weather and be physically capable of quick movement in case of emergency. Able to work independently. Current and clear criminal record check with vulnerable sector screen required.

The role of the School Crossing Guard is to direct and supervise the movement of persons across a highway by creating necessary gaps in vehicular traffic to provide safe passage at a designated school crossing location.
