GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is seeking dedicated and highly skilled professionals to join our Regional Emergency Services (RES) team as Firefighter Paramedics (PCP or ACP) or Non-Fire Trained Advanced Care Paramedics.

These roles offer the opportunity to serve a diverse, dynamic, high-call volume region as part of a fully integrated Fire and EMS service that provides advanced life support, emergency response and specialized services, including helicopter medical and rescue services within our region. RES operates in a complex and demanding environment where professionalism, adaptability, and teamwork are critical to success.

Firefighter Paramedics perform dual roles in fire suppression and EMS, while Non-Fire Trained ACPs focus exclusively on advanced pre-hospital medical care. Both positions are integral to the delivery of high-quality emergency services, while supporting the safety and well-being of our community. These positions are represented by the IAFF Local 2494.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Respond safely and effectively to emergency and non-emergency incidents in accordance with RES policies, procedures and operational guidelines.
  • Deliver high-quality patient care and emergency medical services.
  • Follow direction from operations officers during emergency response, and from officers responsible for training, prevention, and operational readiness.
  • Participate in daily shift operations, including apparatus and equipment checks, station duties, documentation and operational readiness activities.
  • Work collaboratively within a team-based environment where trust, accountability, and communication are essential.
  • Support public education initiatives, fire prevention programs, and community engagement activities.
  • Attend and successfully complete training required to maintain certifications and to progress to First Class Firefighter.
  • Complete administrative and reporting duties accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Contribute to the continuity, effectiveness, and professionalism of the Regional Emergency Services Department.
  • Perform other duties as required.
  • Uphold and support the Corporate Mission, Vision and Values.

WHO YOU ARE

You are a motivated emergency services professional who thrives in demanding environments and understands that excellence in this field requires preparation, resilience, and accountability. You take pride in your work, maintain high professional standards, and recognize the importance of teamwork, discipline, and continuous improvement.

You are physically and mentally prepared for a career that demands sustained performance, exposure to risk, and ongoing training. You demonstrate integrity, adaptability, and a willingness to be fully engaged throughout both the recruitment process and your career with Regional Emergency Services.

SKILLS

  • Ability to maintain sound judgment, focus, and performance in high-stress, unpredictable emergency situations over extended periods.
  • Capacity to work effectively in extreme environmental conditions, including hot, cold, confined, or physically restrictive spaces.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to convey information clearly and professionally.
  • Ability to accurately interpret and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Proficiency with computers and electronic systems, including electronic patient care reporting (ePCR) platforms, incident reporting, and other operational software.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • NFPA 1001 Level I and II is required for Firefighter Paramedic positions.
  • Current Alberta College of Paramedics Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) or Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) Certification is required.
  • Non-Fire Trained Advanced Care Paramedic positions do not require previous fire training. Those hired will have the opportunity to obtain fire training if they choose to become qualified Firefighter ACPs.
  • Valid CPR - Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification.
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid Class Four (4) Alberta Driver's Licence with Q Endorsement is required.
  • Valid Class Three (3) Alberta Driver's Licence with Q Endorsement is preferred.
  • Clear Criminal Record with Vulnerable Sector Check is required.

RECRUITMENT PROCESS AND CANDIDATE EXPECTATIONS

Resumes will be kept on file for consideration for 2026 recruitment campaigns. Qualified applicants may be invited to participate in recruitment testing sessions as they are scheduled throughout the year. Testing dates will be confirmed with selected candidates when invitations are sent.

The recruitment process is competitive and requires active participation. Candidates invited to continue must successfully complete each stage of the process to advance, including:

  • Aptitude Testing (completed in Fort McMurray or remotely through approved invigilation services)
  • Firefighter Physical Fitness Testing (or Paramedic Physical Fitness Testing for ACP positions)
  • Interview
  • Medical Assessment

An outline of the recruitment process can be found on our website: Firefighter and Paramedic Recruitment. Due to the physical demands of this role, applicants are strongly encouraged to begin preparing early for the required fitness test. Preparation resources are available on the our website and on the University of Alberta's website.

The RMWB will accept firefighter fitness test results completed within the past six (6) months from the University of Alberta, Keyano College, or Red Deer Polytechnic. Applicants who have not yet completed the test are still encouraged to apply, as additional testing opportunities may be offered.

This is a challenging and rewarding career involving significant responsibility and exposure to hazardous conditions. Candidates must meet the education requirements outlined in this posting and demonstrate an ongoing commitment to fitness, wellness, and professionalism.

Applicants must be prepared to travel to Fort McMurray, as portions of the recruitment process are conducted in person. This is a competitive selection process, and preparedness, sustained engagement and timely communication throughout all stages are essential.

SAFETY

As an employee of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, the incumbent is responsible for understanding and actively participating in the RMWB’s health and safety management system, including all policies, practices, and procedures, as well as properly utilizing all control measures including the required use of personal protective equipment. All employees must take reasonable care to protect the health and safety of themselves and others, as well as immediately reporting any concerns, near misses, incidents, and hazardous conditions to their supervisor.
