Job description

The Canadian Press / Sony Social Justice Photography Internship

The Canadian Press, in conjunction with Sony of Canada and Journalists for Human Rights, is seeking qualified photography candidates for the inaugural CP / Sony Social Justice Photography Internship, to be based in Toronto in spring 2025.

CP is committed to creating opportunities in journalism for a diverse cohort of qualified candidates throughout our newsrooms. Top-level opportunities in photojournalism are often slow to open up, so gaining valuable experience can be a challenge.

The internship is intended to create an opportunity for a student or early-career Canadian photojournalist from an under-represented demographic to work with CP’s award-winning team and build a foundation and valuable contacts that can help accelerate their career path.

Eligible applicants will have less than five years professional experience, including students, freelance photographers or photographers currently employed full-time at regional or non-daily publications.

While still photography is the main focus of this internship, the successful applicant may also be given some video assignments during the three-month program. The position is paid and is based at the head office of The Canadian Press in Toronto during the internship. It does not include living or personal travel expenses.

The successful candidate will be provided access to camera bodies, lenses and video cameras by The Canadian Press for use during the program.

Additionally, a core kit of Sony camera gear will be awarded to the successful applicant to keep after the program ends, to help launch their career. The applicant will also receive access to Sony’s equipment loan program.

The Canadian Press will retain copyright of any images gathered during the internship. The successful applicant will be able to use their images for portfolio and other personal uses.

The successful candidate will be a self-starter with a record of professional conduct and the ability to take direction and work collaboratively to produce visual content to illustrate the news of the day.

Application requirements :

You must be eligible to work in Canada to apply.

This position will support bringing more diverse participation in Canadian photojournalism by attracting excellent candidates with varied backgrounds including ethnicity, gender, and more.

Submit a detailed cover letter of no more than 1,000 words on why you feel you qualify and how you would use this opportunity to expand your experience as a photojournalist. The internship is geared toward photographers looking to break into daily photojournalism on the national or international stage, so applicants should focus on how the internship would help them accomplish this goal.

Submit a portfolio of at least 12 and no more than 25 photos. Each photo must be captioned. It may also include a brief background explanation on how the photo was captured. Applicants may also submit a multimedia presentation that includes video.

By submitting a portfolio, the successful applicant permits the use of their images by The Canadian Press on social media to promote the next cycle of the award.

Include your resume. Applicants may also submit a letter of recommendation from a current employer or teacher, although this is not mandatory.

All entries should be sent in one Zip file using following naming convention :

firstname_lastname.zip

Files within the Zip file should follow the same naming convention :
