Financial Controller

Position Overview

The Financial Controller is responsible for overseeing all financial operations, reporting, and administrative functions of Summit Access, operating within a unionized construction environment. This role manages a team across Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Payroll, while ensuring compliance with union agreements, regulatory requirements, and industry-specific financial practices.

The Controller plays a key leadership role in financial strategy, cash flow management, audit coordination, cost control and operational efficiency, working closely with project managers, union representatives, financial institutions, and government agencies.

The Controller reports directly to the CEO/owner and works closely with the Fractional CFO and the General Manager.

Position Status: Existing role

Salary: $110,000–$115,000 CAD

Location: Bolton, ON

Job Type: Full-Time

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management & Reporting

  • Oversee full-cycle accounting, including general ledger, month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Prepare and present monthly and annual financial statements and management reports.
  • Develop and manage budgets, forecasts, and cash flow projections.
  • Ensure timely and accurate processing of invoices, collections, and payroll.
  • Conduct variance analysis and provide actionable insights to senior leadership.

Team Leadership & Oversight

  • Lead and mentor a team responsible for Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Payroll.
  • Establish performance expectations, monitor KPIs, and drive continuous improvement.

Payroll & Union Administration

  • Oversee payroll processing in ADP with a multi-union environment, ensuring compliance with various collective agreements.
  • Manage union remittances, dues, benefits, and pension contributions across multiple carpenter union locals.
  • Liaise with union representatives regarding payroll, audits, and compliance matters.
  • Ensure proper classification of labour, rates, and job allocations.

Banking & Cash Flow Management

  • Manage relationships with financial institutions, including credit facilities, bonding, and financing arrangements.
  • Monitor daily cash flow and liquidity requirements.
  • Prepare monthly margin reporting for operating line facility.

Audit & Compliance

  • Coordinate and manage external audits/review engagements, including financial, union, and government audits.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements, including tax laws and industry regulations.
  • Maintain strong internal controls and continuously improve financial processes.
  • Oversee and ensure timely and accurate filing of all government remittances, including HST/GST, Payroll taxes, WSIB filings and payments, corporate income tax and other statutory obligations.
  • Act as the primary liaison with federal, provincial, and municipal authorities.

Office Administration & Operations

  • Oversee general office administration and support functions.
  • Implement and maintain efficient administrative and financial systems.
  • Ensure proper documentation, record-keeping, and workflow processes.

Qualifications & Experience

  • CPA designation (or equivalent).
  • 8–10+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience, preferably in construction or scaffolding.
  • Strong knowledge of union payroll environments.
  • Experience with job costing.
  • Proven leadership experience managing cross-functional teams (AP, AR, Payroll, Purchasing).
  • Experience dealing with banks, audits, and government agencies.
  • Proficiency with ERP/accounting systems (preferably Jonas Premier or similar) and advanced Excel skills.
