PURPOSE :
The Respiratory Therapist is a front line care provider who monitors, evaluates, and treats patients with respiratory and cardiopulmonary issues. Respiratory Therapists are a crucial member of the resuscitation team and they provide care to newborns, pediatric and adult patients throughout various units in the hospital 24 hours a day / 365 days per year. As a member of this team you will be providing advance life support, establishing / maintaining airway support, mechanical ventilation and performing all duties in accordance with the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario professional standards and the Registered Health Professionals Act (RHPA).
DUTIES :
- Perform diagnostic tests, such as arterial blood gas analysis and cardiopulmonary function tests.
- Initiate, maintain and monitor neonatal, pediatric and adult patients requiring invasive and non-invasive ventilation.
- Operate and monitor respiratory equipment to administer treatments such as oxygen, oxygen-air mixtures, or medications.
- Operate, monitor, maintain and test a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic equipment.
- Assess patients and perform or assist with interventions such as airway maintenance, arterial line insertions, and intubations.
- Perform basic and advanced airway management as part of the Code Blue / Pink response team.
- Assist with transport of high-risk adult, pediatric and neonate patients.
- Attend all high risk infant deliveries in the hospital.
- Assist physicians with bronchoscopy.
- Function as a professional role model demonstrating good interpersonal skills and a commitment to self-growth and development.
- Maintain current knowledge of best practices and benchmarks for the delivery of services, appropriate research, literature, accreditation requirements, policy and legislative requirements and implementing improvements / changes as appropriate.
- Comply with organizational policies, procedures and standards.
- Other duties as assigned.
