Position Title : Ophthalmic Assistant
Location : Sudbury, ON
Term : Full-time, Contract
Reports To : General Manager, Eye Van
Salary : $32.70 / hour
Date : 3 February, 2025
I. Scope and Summary of Primary Responsibilities
This position is responsible for the clinical excellence in the Medical Mobile Eye Care Unit (Eye Van) throughout Northern Ontario. The position plays a key role in ensuring outstanding patient experience. A key position on this team, as an Ophthalmic Assistant, you will work with the Eye Van team of staff and doctors to deliver high quality patient care by conducting health screening and testing, operating medical equipment, collaborating with medical professionals, engaging community partners, and supporting clinical operations related to the program. Extensive travel and consecutive over-night stays are required at multiple remote communities throughout Northern Ontario. This position is eligible for a travel per diem expense reimbursement.
II. Essential Functions
This position entails, but is not limited to the following general responsibilities :
- Maintains a positive culture of patient-centered care- working with the team to understand the program goals and objectives.
- Under the guidance of the Ophthalmologist in the ambulatory setting, provides excellent patient care.
- Obtain patient past and present ocular and general medical history. Provide other patient services and education as requested by the physicians. Including referrals to other specialists and vision loss rehabilitation service and programs.
- Perform visual acuity, Perform diagnostic testing under the supervision of physicians. These tests include visual field testing, ocular coherence Tomography, pachymetry, and intraocular pressure check and other related ocular tests.
- Uses interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, and other customers
- Provides age specific care to patients from toddlers through elderly
- Takes responsibility for self-development and supports a learning environment
- Performs intake and registration tasks upon patient arrival and ensures patient consent is obtained as per program policies.
- Coordinate’s pharmaceutical, medical supply, and surgical instruments inventories and ensures instruments are sterilized following set protocols.
- Maintains sanitization practices for all equipment and clinic areas in between patient appointments.
- Performs administrative duties, including, but not limited to, data input, documentation of assessments, OHIP / Billing, Incident / Health and Safety Reports, and completes various evaluations.
- Provides orientation for new Ophthalmologists, Residents, Medical and Ophthalmic related professional students (COMT, COT, Optometry) and program volunteers.
- Performs tasks related to the pre / post Eye Van Tour.
- Represents and participates in public relations activities under the guidance of the General Manager
- Travels to communities; prepares unit for clinics including set up and testing of medical equipment, and technology equipment and computer.
