Job Summary.

The Nurse Supervisor plays a fundamental role in maintaining and enhancing the quality of care for our children who live at Hope’s Home. Through collaboration and teamwork, they ensure each child receives exceptional care and support that allows each child to grow to their full potential. They are responsible for maintaining and upholding all standards for nursing practice and advocating for the needs of each child. They collaborate closely with staff, the child’s healthcare team, and others to ensure each child is receiving the necessary supports to live a full life. There are two Nurse Supervisors in the Supportive Living home and both report to the Manager of Supportive Living.

Responsibilities.

Operational Duties.

  • Collaborate with Senior Manager of Supportive Living and other members of the leadership team for admissions, transfers, and discharges of children.
  • Collaborate with each child’s healthcare team and others to address the needs of the child (e.g., pediatrician, specialists, dieticians, teachers, CNIB, Saskatchewan Health Authority)
  • Develop and maintain care plans in collaboration with staff and/or external professionals.
  • Ensure care plans are complete, current, and being followed appropriately.
  • Maintain and monitor appointment logs.
  • Arrange staffing to accompany child to the hospital and report to Ministry of Social Services Worker and the Senior Manager of Supportive Living.
  • Intervene and advocate with outside professionals and organizations for the required health care needs of Hope’s Home children.
  • Facilitate quarterly meetings with the Social Workers.
  • Communicate and collaborate with each child’s Social Services Worker regarding child’s progress, health needs and wellbeing (e.g., school progress reports, required equipment, work being done with child’s healthcare team, etc.)
  • Report and communicate to each child’s Social Worker, minor and major occurrences, and quarterly reports.
  • Monitor the need for and the implementation of program activities as developed by the Recreational Programmers and manage programming on the floor.
  • Complete reports for medication errors, unusual occurrences, and minor injuries and provide to Ministry of Social Services Worker and the Senior Manager of Supportive Living.
  • Oversee the maintenance and update of equipment used by each child.
  • Monitor to ensure emergency equipment is regularly maintained and replaced as required.
  • Monitor to ensure portable emergency equipment and outing bags are complete with all up to date and working equipment as required.
  • Develop and keep current all medical emergency protocols and communicate to staff.
  • Participate in financial budget preparation duties.
  • Fill shifts and operate within the established budget.
  • Act as the primary contact for general inquires, sick calls, and emergency calls.
  • Remain on-call for all scheduled days to assist staff with questions and/or work in place of floor staff if unable to fill vacant shifts (Flex Time is permitted if hours worked is over 160 in a 4-week period).
  • Act as the back up to any position within the center when necessary to maintain operations and ensure proper ratios. (e.g., act as a floor Nurse, Developmental Worker, Recreation Programmer, Administrative Assistant).
  • Collaborate with the SL Manager to complete the long-term scheduling of all staff.
  • Acts as scheduler and fills shifts when staff call in sick.
  • Oversee quality control for policy and procedure, checklists, and emergency protocols.
  • Communicate and build rapport with external stakeholders such as: Ministry of Social Services. Physicians. Pharmacies. Early Childhood Intervention Program. CNIB Foundation. Saskatchewan Health Authority.
  • Monitor and track medical equipment and supplies.
  • Facilitate family visits and tours of the home.
  • Participate in Direct Report and team meetings.
  • Bring forward agenda items for discussion in nursing department meetings and provide input.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Nursing Duties.

  • Assist in physical assessments of children.
  • Ensure children’s charts are complete and up to date.
  • Act as a floor nurse when necessary to ensure proper ratios.
  • Maintain adequate floor staffing ratios.
  • Develop and maintain care plans and collaborate with staff and/or external professionals when required.
  • Ensure care plans are complete, current, and being followed appropriately.
  • Attend children’s clinic meetings and/or appointments with physician(s), specialist(s) or any other outside practitioner providing care or treatment to the children, or, if unable to attend, delegate attendance to another nurse within the supportive living location and follow up to ensure pertinent information is processed.
  • Advocate for the required health care needs of the children.
  • Regularly maintain emergency equipment and make available in accordance with Hope’s Home’s policies and procedures.
  • Prepare portable emergency equipment and outing bags when necessary and as required.
  • Complete reports for medication errors, unusual occurrences, and minor injuries.
  • Monitor and provide observations regarding effectiveness of therapeutic programs.
  • Perform admission and discharge function or delegate appropriately.

Human Resources.

  • Assist the SL Manager in the hiring/termination of staff.
  • Assist in supervising all staff in the home.
  • Support the training of all new employees on the following: standard practices, policies, and procedures of Hope’s Home and the Supportive Living program, Colour Cards.
  • Oversee and provide medical orientation to newly hired, non -nursing staff.
  • Training should be planned and delegated in accordance with Hope’s Home policies and procedures over a period of two (2) weeks.
  • Assist in providing coaching and mentoring to communicate expectations and goals, build accountability, and motivate performance.
  • Assist in the performance evaluation and progressive discipline process of staff.
  • Monitor and evaluate students work performance.
  • Participate in transitioning and supporting staff through grief and loss.

Occupational Health and Safety.

  • Create a psychologically safe work environment (resolve conflicts in respectful ways and ensure a fair resolution, provide an environment where employees feel safe and supported to share ideas, listen, learn from, and seek to understand the ideas of others).
  • Operate within OHS legislative requirements within the home.
  • Complete all required OHS training.
  • Monitor, report and resolve any safety hazards in the work environment.

Qualifications.

  • Practicing License in good standing with the licensing body: SALPN, CRNS, or RPNA
  • Minimum Diploma as Licensed Practical Nursing
  • Pediatric experience an asset.
  • Supervisory/leadership experience an asset.
  • Experience with behavioural complexities an asset.
  • Knowledge of current nursing practices.
  • Must have valid driver’s license.

  • Physical ability to perform and safely work with objects or persons of varying sizes: Exertion of ~100 lbs of force occasionally. Exertion of ~50 lbs of force regularly. Exertion of ~25 lbs of force continuously.
