About the University of Toronto Libraries

The University of Toronto Libraries (UTL) system is the largest academic library in Canada and is ranked in the top five among peer institutions in North America. The system comprises 40 libraries located across three university campuses: St.George, Mississauga, and Scarborough. This diverse and extensive network of college libraries, special collections, and specialized information centres plays a pivotal role in supporting the teaching, scholarly, and research needs of nearly 100,000 students enrolled in a wide array of graduate, professional, and undergraduate programs.

The library system provides access to millions of resources in various formats, including electronic, print, audio-visual, data and geospatial materials. UTL also boasts impressive holdings of archival material and substantial digital collections, securely preserved in the libraries' data centre. The staff at UTL are integral to the academic and scholarly enterprise, working closely with faculty and students to support their teaching, learning, and research requirements. They are subject matter experts; they are skilled in research data management, collections, statistics, GIS, metadata, digital preservation, scholarly communications, copyright, teaching, knowledge synthesis, open access and much more. Our work is grounded in our commitment to support equity, diversity, and inclusion. UTL continuously evolves to meet the changing academic priorities and pressures at the University and within the broader landscape of higher education.

The University of Toronto Libraries (UTL) seeks an adaptable, highly collaborative and innovative librarian for the position of Scholarly Publishing and Repository Services Librarian. Reporting to the Web and Discovery Services Librarian, Scholars Portal, the Scholarly Publishing and Repository Services Librarian will work closely with the Scholaris service team, departmental colleagues, Canadian academic and research institutions, service partners, regional consortia, and external organizations to provide operational support for the Scholaris service, the Canadian shared repository system and contribute to other national initiatives to enhance the visibility and discoverability of Canadian research. This position includes developing guidance and workflows to assist the Canadian repository community in implementing Tri-Agency Open Access Policy mandates, providing direct support to Scholaris institutions, contributing to the development of a governance model and a bilingual service model for Scholaris.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide onboarding, migration, and ongoing support for Scholaris subscribers, including developing documentation, training materials, managing support requests, testing and documenting DSpace updates, reporting issues, and participating in community sessions.
  • Contribute to the establishment of a governance model for the operational service, including development of bylaws, policies, and procedures.
  • Contribute to development of a bilingual service model, including conducting needs assessment and establishing service standards.
  • Collaborate with other Scholars Portal service teams to identify opportunities for alignment across services (e.g., Permafrost, Borealis).
  • Coordinate with sector partners (CARL, Érudit, CRKN) to develop guidance, tools, and supports that enable effective adoption of new open access (OA) policies.
  • Contribute to community discussions, capacity building initiatives, and projects related to implementation of the revised Tri-Agency Open Access Policy, which may include:
    ○ Investigating automated deposit mechanisms and workflows to increase and standardize deposits of Canadian scholarship into institutional repositories.
    ○ Investigating avenues for increasing discovery of Canadian research from institutional repositories (e.g., via discovery platforms, aggregation services, or national applications)
  • Contribute to the development of strategies and workflows to increase adoption of persistent identifiers (PIDs) within the Canadian repository community.
  • Raise awareness of the service and promote best practices and sector alignment, based on participation in repository conferences, workshops, and discussions.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in library, archival or information science from an accredited institution.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the values of inclusivity, diversity, equity and accessibility.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills, with a demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Strong French language skills, including speaking, writing, and professional correspondence.
  • Strong problem solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with creating documentation, policies, and training materials for diverse audiences.
  • Awareness of trends and issues related to scholarly publishing, open access, and open source development, including publishing models, open access licensing, rights retention, and copyright.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with institutional repository software platforms (DSpace preferred) and institutional repository management.
  • Experience working with metadata standards (e.g., Dublin Core), harvesting protocols (e.g., OAI-PMH), and/or discovery platforms (e.g., OpenAIRE, OpenAlex, Theses Canada).
  • Understanding of web and document accessibility principles.
  • Demonstrated experience participating in collaborative projects or community initiatives at the regional, national, or international level.
