The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) is a national museum dedicated to the evolution, celebration and future of human rights. It is the first national museum in Canada to be built outside the National Capital Region. Located in the heart of Canada in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the CMHR rises from the Prairie earth at The Forks, which has been a meeting place for over six thousand years.

About the role

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) is centred around the idea that respect and understanding of human rights can serve as a positive force for change in the world. The Senior Financial Analyst will support our collective efforts to build a workplace culture that is inclusive, equitable, innovative and focused on inspiring action.

Reporting to the Vice-president, Internal Services and Chief Financial Officer, the Senior Financial Analyst is responsible for the development, monitoring, management and reporting of the Museum’s capital and operating budgets by analyzing and inputting data into the financial system, creating reports and analyzing results. This position serves as a resource to leaders throughout the organization, providing analytical methods and financial measures to support their decision making. This position will be responsible for internal reporting functions including internally developed monthly reports against budget with dashboard reporting for members of the leadership team. External reporting will include budgetary information for the corporate planning and annual report cycle.

The incumbent will be a strong and thoughtful communicator, critical thinker and innovator, and will bring a collaborative approach to their role.

What you will do

  • Contribute to a culture that promotes respect, equity, inclusion and innovation, and models anti-racist and accountable behaviours.
  • Be responsible for the complete operational and capital budgeting cycle, including maintaining budget cycle calendars containing procurement and lifecycle items for the CMHR and corporate plan processes and financial statements.
  • Be responsible for internal financial reporting to the leadership team and CMHR budget owners, including preparing relevant and intuitive reporting on a monthly and quarterly basis, as well as leading the revenue forecast and budget.
  • Be responsible for financial analysis and strategy planning for the CMHR, including revenue-generating activities; help to provide guidance to Friends of the CMHR when necessary.
  • Be responsible for analysis and government and external financial reporting requirements that demand an understanding of parliamentary and Treasury Board of Canada standards and processes.
  • Analyze and interpret financial data to produce budgets and forecasts of business, industry and economic conditions for use in making business and investment decisions.
  • Prepare internal reporting for leadership to analyze actual versus budget and reforecast throughout the year.
  • Manage all aspects of the budgeting and forecasting processes, both for capital projects and annual operations, by working with management to develop targets, action plans and monitoring processes.
  • Work closely with People and Culture with respect to staffing and salary projections, prepare various scenarios and financial analysis during collective bargaining and provide recommendations related to staffing levels and compensation.
  • Support management for accounting assistance, revenue, sales and cost analysis as required, and formal variance analysis with action-oriented plans to address deviations.
  • Play a key role in special projects, working closely with the other support functions to assist with costing, market and client analysis, product analysis, and other potential areas leading to revenue growth for the Museum.
  • Serve as a resource to management by providing financial analysis and business analytics.
  • Maintain and adhere to controls within the financial system and develop procedures in line with best practices.
  • Monitor fundamental economic, industrial and corporate developments through the analysis of information from various sources.

    • What we’re looking for

  • Certified Professional Accounting designation preferred, or a combination of completed accounting-related education and related experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ budgeting experience and experience performing complex financial modeling and analysis, using proven budgeting and forecasting techniques, as well as proficiency with financial statement analysis and projection.
  • Commitment to human rights principles, including respect, equity, inclusion and dignity for all.
  • Exposure to and experience supporting overall business strategy and operations by supporting budgeting, reporting and analysis.
  • Experience and demonstrated capability of serving as an effective financial business partner in a customer-oriented environment dealing with a wide range of business areas, including marketing, promotion and pricing.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple projects and priorities in a deadline-oriented environment.
  • Proficiency in ERP systems, database management and spreadsheet applications.
  • Strong analytical ability; produces accurate and well-organized documents and reports.
  • Detail-oriented; approaches responsibilities with integrity, precision and accountability.
  • Assertive, with ability to make decisions and problem-solve.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills.
