ITINERANT TEACHER, INDIGENOUS EDUCATION

TERM POSITION : Two (2) year term with the possibility of a one-year extension effective immediately. This position is subject to budget approval and / or annual system organization and Ministry funding continuan ce.

POSITION OVERVIEW :

Under the direction of the Superintendent of Curriculum Services, and the Indigenous Education Advisor, the Indigenous Education Itinerant will work as a member of an interdisciplinary system team to support the embedding of Indigenous content throughout curricula and the implementation of culturally responsive pedagogy through an anti-oppression lens.

The Itinerant Teacher, Indigenous Education will provide support to school teams K-12 to deepen educator understanding of effective instructional strategies in Indigenous Education that are data driven and research based. This position will work closely with schools in their efforts to embedded Indigenous content as per Ministry of Education, support the wellness, well-being and school experiences of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students, demonstrating a professional and personal commitment to high levels of student achievement and well-being. This position will liaise with Program Services Staff, school administration, and Indigenous community partners and organizations.

The Itinerant Teacher will be responsible for :

  • Working directly with educators to support the goals of the Indigenous Education Team; and on the integration of Education for Reconciliation by addressing the ongoing implementation needs of educators to build capacity to effectively serve the diverse needs of students and school communities.
  • Assisting schools and educators in the selection of appropriate instructional, assessment and evaluation resources which directly support historically and currently marginalized students, focusing on First Nation, Métis, and Inuit students.
  • Facilitating and supporting educators to further embed Indigenous perspectives across multiple curricular areas, including but not limited to Gr. 9 NAC 1, Gr. 11 NBE, AP and IB Indigenous Literature Courses.
  • Co-developing and co-facilitating high quality and effective professional learning opportunities for HCDSB staff.
  • Providing in-class support for Indigenous community partners as guest speakers as determined by Board Action Plan initiatives.
  • Fostering connections with Indigenous community partners and organizations.
  • Responding to school-based inquiries related to Indigenous Education.
  • Supporting transformational change to integrate anti-colonial, anti-racist, anti-oppressive and equity principles into programs and practices to eliminate systemic inequities.
  • Participating in the acquisition / distribution of appropriate resources in collaboration with the Indigenous Education Advisor and Curriculum Consultant-Indigenous Education.
  • Working to ensure alignment between the Ministry, the Board, and schools regarding the implementation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action, Ministerial Directives, the Indigenous Education Board Action Plan
  • Providing information and assistance as requested by the Indigenous Education Advisor.

  • Knowledge and training in Indigenous Education and Human Rights; Equity and Inclusive Education
  • Strong interpersonal skills when working with a variety of school-based staff, professionals and parents.
  • Ability to effectively engage in co-planning, co-teaching and co-learning, co-reflecting on lesson engagements, instruction and assessment practices aimed to augment equitable learning environments with educators
  • Strong emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills that facilitate and support critical dialogue on oppression, marginalization, colonialism, and racism
  • Excellent facilitation and presentation skills demonstrated in a variety of settings and for various audiences
  • Knowing and understanding with sensitivity the effects and impacts of historical educational experiences of Indigenous Peoples
  • Strong aptitude for building relationships, fostering teamwork and achieving shared goals in a dynamic, progressive and multifaceted environment
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
