WHO WE ARE

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) was established in 1999 as an international independent agency to lead a collaborative worldwide movement for doping-free sport. As the global regulatory body, WADA’s primary role is to develop, harmonize and coordinate anti-doping rules and policies across all sports and countries. Our key activities include : scientific and social science research; education; intelligence & investigations; development of anti-doping capacity; and, monitoring of compliance with the World Anti-Doping Program.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Medical Manager will join the Medical Team of the Science and Medicine Department and assist with the ongoing development of the Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) process and monitoring and reviewing TUEs. The candidate will support WADA’s TUE Committees in the evaluation and review of TUE applications and provide expert guidance to Anti-Doping Organizations on the implementation and interpretation of the TUE process, promoting global harmonization, consistency, and integrity across the anti-doping system.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

TUE Screening, Evaluation, and Monitoring

  • Review and assess TUE applications submitted by Anti-Doping Organizations (ADOs) to ensure medical justification and compliance with the International Standard for Therapeutic Use Exemptions (ISTUE) criteria;
  • Monitor TUE practices across ADOs and provide expert feedback to enhance consistency, quality, and compliance within the global TUE framework;
  • Support WADA TUE Committees (TUECs) throughout all stages of TUE reviews and decision-making, ensuring timely and medically sound outcomes.

Medical and Scientific Expertise

  • Assist the TUE Expert Advisory Group in developing, updating, and harmonizing TUE Physician Guidelines and other medical reference documents;
  • Provide scientific and medical input on emerging research, initiatives, and policy developments impacting TUE processes;
  • Contribute to scientific publications and special projects under the supervision of the Head of Medicine.
  • Stakeholder Support and Communication

  • Support ADOs for TUE-related inquiries, ensuring accurate and consistent guidance;
  • Liaise with the Compliance, ADAMS, and Communications teams to support audits, system enhancements, and public communications related to TUEs.
  • Education and Outreach

  • Present and deliver training sessions (virtually and in person) to educate stakeholders on TUE processes, medical principles, and best practices in anti-doping medicine;
  • Contribute to the development of educational resources and policy tools that promote consistent and ethical application of TUE principles.
  • Reporting

  • Prepare analytical and management reports summarizing trends, observations, and recommendations arising from TUE monitoring;
  • Participate in professional development activities to maintain expertise in clinical, pharmacological, and regulatory domains relevant to anti-doping.
  • QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Master’s degree or higher (e.g., M.Sc., D.Pharm, M.D.) in Medicine, Health Sciences, Pharmacology, or Pharmacy;
  • Solid experience in clinical medicine, pharmacology, or pharmacy, with demonstrated understanding of therapeutic principles, pharmacodynamics, and pharmacokinetics relevant to athlete health and performance;
  • Direct experience or strong familiarity with international sport, the World Anti-Doping Code, and the Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) process, including medical assessment and monitoring, is a distinct asset;
  • Proven knowledge and interest in international medical guidelines, evidence-based practice, and global standards for therapeutic management and medical governance in sport;
  • Analytical and organizational skills, with proficiency in data analysis, and digital documentation systems (e.g., ADAMS or equivalent), ensuring accuracy and compliance in TUE screening and monitoring activities;
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including scientific and regulatory writing; experience preparing peer-reviewed biomedical or policy documents considered an asset;
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary and multicultural environments; skilled in engaging effectively with physicians, NADOs, IFs, and other anti-doping stakeholders with professionalism and discretion;
  • High degree of intercultural competence and sensitivity to the diverse needs and contexts of athletes and medical practitioners worldwide;
  • Excellent oral and written skills in one of the two WADA official languages (English / French) and very good command of the other official language; additional languages would be an asset;
  • Capacity to manage competing priorities and deliver high-quality outcomes under time pressure;
  • Some travel may be required;
