Vancouver Island University (VIU), located on the west coast of Canada, is one of Canada’s most inclusive universities. We place students and communities at the centre of our work, recognizing that education is a key determinant of social progress and economic prosperity. Our unique student experience includes small class sizes; dedicated, award-winning faculty; and exceptional undergraduate research opportunities that are often realized in collaboration with our many community partners. We also offer a wide variety of educational options and starting points, including upgrading, trades, and undergraduate and graduate programs, to support the varied educational needs of both our domestic and international students. This personalized approach prepares VIU students for success in the workforce and gives them the skills to act as responsible global citizens. At the foundation of this work is our focus on ensuring as many people as possible can access post-secondary education.
Vancouver Island University invites applications for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Language Revitalization. Tier 2 Canada Research Chairs are exceptional, emerging researchers acknowledged by their peers as having the potential to demonstrate world-class leadership.
This person will be an emerging world-class researcher with a demonstrated interest in issues relating to Indigenous language revitalization. VIU has exceptionally strong ties to local Indigenous communities and attracts a high number of Indigenous students to its three campuses. Indigenous community partners continue to identify language revitalization and cultural sovereignty as priorities in our work together. This position provides an opportunity to build a research program that supports Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action 13-17 addressing language and culture. This work is supported by collaboration between VIU’s Office of Indigenous Education and Engagement and Faculties of Education and Arts & Humanities.
We would expect that this researcher would achieve a level of international recognition in the short term, attract excellent graduate students, collaborate with faculty on campus and other researchers off campus on joint research initiatives, and provide funding to VIU students through the sponsorship of major projects and theses.
Research Areas
Some potential research avenues and initiatives could be :
- Collaborative, community-based research initiatives focused on Indigenous language revitalization
- Indigenous pedagogy and perspectives in language learning
- The impact of incorporating Indigenous language into curriculum across campus as part of the indigenization of the curriculum
- Fostering sense of belonging at VIU through the presence and availability of language learning opportunities
- Designing programs for Indigenous language teacher certification
