Purpose
A track maintenance job involves inspecting, repairing, and maintaining railroad tracks to ensure their safety and efficiency. Responsibilities include replacing worn rails, ties, and ballast, clearing debris, and using hand and power tools to fix minor and major track defects. These roles often require physical labor.
Responsibilities
- Inspect tracks to identify and report damaged or broken components like rails, ties, and spikes.
- Work as part of a crew to replace worn or broken rails, ties, and spikes.
- Spread, level, and tamp ballast around ties and rails using specialized equipment.
- Repair and maintain switches and other track components.
- Work to restore tracks in response to production requirements, such as repairing damage from wear and tear.
- Operate various machines and equipment for tasks like laying, maintaining, and repairing tracks.
- Ensure a safe work area, operate equipment to standard, and maintain tools.
