Island Health’s North Vancouver Island Psychiatrist Services has an opening for a full-time General Psychiatrist. The successful applicant will provide the following services :
- Location : Campbell River Hospital
Time : Part time (approximately 4 hours), 2-4 days per week, Monday-Friday
Consultation Liaison referrals from GP’s and specialists on inpatients in medicine / surgery / obs / gyn who require psychiatric assessment. It would be required that all admitted patients would have an assigned MRP for continuity of care prior to consultative input by the psychiatrist. Upon discharge, if deemed appropriate, community connections for follow-up would occur, such as through MHSU. The psychiatrist would collaborate with MHSU staff for continuity of care.
This position will be shared with other psychiatrists for up to 5 half day coverage at the site. It is hoped that for planned absences the psychiatric team working at CRH would provide coverage for care on all weekdays. Outside of these hours there is telephone advice provided by the North Island psychiatrists call schedule.
Service : Collaborative Care Consultations, MHSU consultations (ASTAT and ACSS), North Island psychiatric outreach
Time : Part Time (approximately 3-4 hours), 4-5 days per week, Monday-Friday
Collaborative Care Consultation would provide semi-urgent and ambulatory psychiatric service. An initial psychiatric consultation with some limited option to provide longer term follow-up would be offered. The referrals would be from Primary Care providers. This would be about 1 half day weekly. These consults would occur at Comox Valley Hospital Wellness Clinic or could occur at Campbell River Hospital.
Campbell River MHSU work with the community teams (ACSS and ASTAT) providing consultations and follow-up. This would be 1-2 half day per week supporting ACSS and could be flexed with rural outreach (see below) to teams (Gold River, Cortes, Quadra, Tahsis) via telehealth one clinic per month. This would be ONLY with case managed patients.
Inpatient Consultations and Follow-up
During planned absences of other psychiatrists there is potential to assist with providing coverage with other psychiatrists in Comox Valley Hospital for inpatient care.
Electroconvulsive therapy is provided by psychiatrists at Comox Valley Hospital. Six psychiatrists participate in the roster and are on one week at a time. Participation in the roster is optional for this position if the candidate is located primarily in Campbell River.
On-call duties are a part of this position and would occur only at the Comox Valley Hospital Site where the Psychiatric ward (15 open unit and 4 Psychiatric Intensive Care rooms) is located for the North Island. This would involve evening call (which is mostly over the phone) and weekend call. This is shared with a group of general adult psychiatrists and sub-specialists. There are currently twelve psychiatrists in the group.
