Job description

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

To perform the full scope of pathologist assistant practice (surgical pathology and autopsy pathology) under the direction and supervision of medically qualified pathologists.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform high-quality macroscopic (gross) examination and dissection of simple to complex surgical pathology specimens and the related tasks arising within this scope of practice.
  • Perform high-quality postmortem examinations across the full-scope of hospital and medical-legal/forensic autopsies with the pathologist and the related tasks arising within this scope of practice. This occurs in the setting of a hospital-based regional forensic pathology unit under the medical direction of a forensic pathologist.
  • Daily coordination of position activities with pathologists, histology staff/senior, and laboratory management.
  • On-going self-directed continuing education.
  • Contribute to the enrichment of the laboratory medicine program in the course of this position.
  • Maintenance of the surgical and autopsy pathology work areas.
  • Compliance with organizational protocols.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree from a NAACLS-accredited Pathologists’ Assistant program; or,
  • Recent experience as a surgical and autopsy pathologist assistant subject to Laboratory Medical Director approval.
  • Certified or in process of certification with the Canadian Certification Council of Pathologists’ Assistants [PA(CCCPA-CCCAP)] and/or American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification [PA(ASCP)] is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS:

  • Ability to work efficiently, accurately, and independently.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work sensitively and perform calmly and professionally under pressure in both hospital and medical-legal environments.
  • Ability to maintain successful working relationships with the interdisciplinary team to achieve positive service outcomes.
  • Excellent problem solving, critical thinking, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Computer knowledge and skills (e.g. Meditech, EPIC/Beaker, ConnectingOntario, speech recognition software – Dragon dictation, Microsoft environment).
  • Must be able to sit and stand and perform mentally and physically demanding tasks for extended periods.
  • Ability to work Days- Monday to Friday, any exceptions on an agreed basis.
  • Ability to work in environments with exposure to hazardous chemicals, sharp/pointed instruments, and human specimens and bodies.
