position summary
St. Lawrence College is looking for Learning Coaches for our Cornwall campus. The Learning Coach, as assigned by the Accessibility Services Coordinator or Accessibility Advisor, works with individual students with functional limitations to assist with the implementation of academic accommodations, such as strategy sessions, testing services or in-class note taking assignments. Work assignments may vary in frequency, length, and time of day. Responsibilities to a particular student will be outlined and assigned by the Accessibility Services Coordinator or Accessibility Advisor based on the student’s accommodation plan:
- Working one-on-one with students with disability-related functional limitations, proposing and implementing strategies to assist students develop skills in time management, organization, study skills, memory strategies, and presentation skills
- Learning Coaches do not provide academic or subject-related tutoring
- As assigned, attending classes as a note taker, taking quality academic notes in a variety of subjects as part of a student’s accommodation plan
- Proctoring tests in the St. Lawrence College Test Centre or acting as a reader or scribe during assessments as needed
- May include evening or weekend work as needed
- Other duties as required, outlined by the Accessibility Services Coordinator or Accessibility Advisor
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
A minimum of a 2-year diploma in a relevant field such as Developmental Service Worker, Social Service Worker, Educational Assistant, or studies in Behavioural Science, Autism, Learning Disabilities, Disability Studies.
A minimum of 2 years of working with students with disabilities in an educational setting.
Other Required Qualifications:
- Ability to work with a diverse student population through customizing approach to meet the individual student’s needs
- Strong communication and engagement skills
- Expertise in teaching and/or coaching and developing study skills
- Strong understanding of the lived experiences of individuals with disabilities in educational settings
- Knowledge of relevant legislation governing the rights of persons with disabilities (AODA, Canadian Human Rights Act, Ontario Human Rights Code)
- Must have the ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality
- Proficiency in computer applications (word processing, email communications, internet research, online resources, etc.)
- Respond to needs in sensitive, positive, and solutions-focused manner
- Utilize excellent judgment, analytical and problem-solving skills
- Strong knowledge of various learning styles
- Ability multi-task and to work in a fast-paced environment
Physical/Work Environment Essential Requirements:
The incumbent must have the ability to report to the work location.
Salary & Terms
- Support Group: Pay Band D
- Hours per week: Up to 24 hours per week, evenings, and weekends on an as needed basis.
- Start Rate: $24.35/hour, plus 6% in lieu of vacation pay.
