Description :

The Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures and the Anne Tanenbaum Centre for Jewish Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in Yiddish Studies. The appointment will be at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2025. The successful candidate will be appointed to the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures (51%) and hold a minority appointment in the Anne Tanenbaum Centre for Jewish Studies (49%). The successful candidate will also be named the Abraham and Malka Green Professor in Yiddish Studies for a three-year term, which will be renewable following a favourable review.

Applicants must hold a PhD with a research and teaching portfolio demonstrating a substantial focus on Yiddish language, literature and culture. Candidates must have the ability to teach Yiddish language and Yiddish literature and culture in Yiddish and in English and demonstrate an exceptional record of excellence in research and teaching as well as relevant experience in research supervision at the undergraduate and graduate levels. We encourage applications reflecting a wide range of methodological, critical, comparative and regional perspectives. We seek candidates with proven ability to cross disciplinary boundaries and whose research and teaching interests complement and strengthen departmental strengths in both the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures and Anne Tanenbaum Center for Jewish Studies . Candidates will have an established international reputation and be expected to sustain and lead innovative and independent research at the highest international level.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence that can be demonstrated by a distinguished record of sustained and impactful scholarship, including books and articles in field-relevant journals, presentations at significant conferences, and noteworthy research initiatives that contribute to the visibility and prominence of Yiddish Studies, as well as strong endorsements from referees.

The successful candidate is expected to help to build undergraduate and graduate education in interdisciplinary Yiddish Studies. Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments and the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application (with required materials outlined below), as well as strong letters of reference.

Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

All qualified candidates are invited to apply online by clicking the link below. Applicants must submit a cover letter; a current CV; a research statement outlining current and future research interests; one recent publication; and a teaching dossier which includes a teaching statement, sample course syllabi, and teaching evaluations.

We seek candidates who share these values and who demonstrate throughout the application materials their commitment and efforts to advance equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment.

Applicants must provide the name and contact information of three references. The references should comment on the candidate's research and at least one of the references should speak to teaching. The University of Toronto’s recruiting tool will automatically solicit and collect letters of reference from each referee the day after an application is submitted. Applicants remain responsible for ensuring that references submit recent letters (on letterhead, dated, and signed) by the closing date. More details on the automatic reference letter collection, including timelines, are available in the candidate FAQ .

Submission guidelines can be found at http : / / uoft.me / how-to-apply . Your CV and cover letter should be uploaded into the dedicated fields. Please combine additional application materials into one or two files in PDF / MS Word format. If you have any questions about this position, please contact Helena Jünger, [email protected] .

All application materials, including recent reference letters, must be received by January 6, 2025.
