Job description

Project Manager – Broad Reach Canada, youth development-focused charity, BN 891674525 Corporation # 361605-3 officially the  Broad Reach Foundation for Youth Leaders, is a Toronto-based registered charity established in 1998 that provides free sail training and leadership development programs for under-represented / BIPOC youth.

Core Mission and Programs

The organization uses sail training as sport, science, and experiential education to help youth aged 12–24 (and up to 30 in some programs) develop knowledge, networks, life and pre-employment skills, and a sense of social belonging through volunteer service.

  • Ships2Shores :  A flagship national project that offers youth-led sail training voyages on various vessels, including tall ships. Participants engage in 120 hours of activities, including onboard training and a self-directed community service projects
  • Winter A-Shore :  A classroom-based program focusing on sailing theory, maritime history and heritage, environmental protection, Indigenous relations, youth resilience and S.T.E.A.M. subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math)
  • Summer A-Float : On water and ashore program focused on sail training aboard large keelboats and tall ships
  • Sailing Access Fund :  A financial assistance program that provides bursaries to cover travel and program costs for youth from diverse, disadvantaged backgrounds.
  • National Youth Leadership Council (NYLC) :  A youth-centric body through which participants have a direct voice in the charity's decision-making and program design and delivery

  • National Scope :  While headquartered in Toronto, the organization has expanded its reach to the East Coast, Great Lakes, and West Coast, partnering with various tall ship organizations.
  • Accessibility :  Broad Reach is the only charity in Canada that provides its unique programming  free of charge  to participants, aiming to remove economic barriers to the maritime world.
  • Inclusivity :  Programs specifically target equity-seeking groups, including Indigenous youth, 2SLGBTQ+ youth, newcomers, and those from low-income households.

  • Headquarters :  20 Lower Spadina Ave, Suite 304, Toronto, ON M5V 2Z1.
  • Governance :  Led by CEO Marguerite Pyron and a volunteer Board of Directors.
  • Broad Reach has a full-time position for a full-time 12-month Black Girls Set Sail Project Manager.

    Job Summary :

    Reporting to the CEO, the Project Manager will lead the planning, implementation and oversight of all project deliverables ensuring exceptional quality of service, outcomes, and sustainability.

    Work Location : On site and remote with a requirement to attend various sites in the City of Toronto during work hours as part of outreach, collaborations, community engagement, events, and some working evenings and weekends when needed.

    Start Date : beginning of February 2026

    Compensation : Maximum $30 per hour, commensurate with experience and skills

    Duration : One year, with the possibility of extension

    Key Responsibilities :

    The Project Manager is required to perform the following duties professionally, with accountability and commitment :

  • Providing culturally-appropriate individual and group supervision to project staff and volunteers
  • Providing operational direction and execution of the project to ensure excellent service, experience, and outcomes. Creating and maintaining partnerships to enhance wraparound support for the project’s participants to meet the project’s goals and to ensure that services are exceptional, respectful, relevant, timely and impactful
  • Ensuring participants’, volunteers’, and staff safety
  • Recruiting and retaining qualified, skilled staff to deliver high-quality services to project’s participants
  • Developing, enhancing, innovating, and implementing the organization’s programming to ensure high-quality service to the community that meets legislative requirements, quality standards, and grant parameters
  • Building and enhancing relationships and commitment with project participants through appropriate communication strategies
  • Conducting continuous outreach to members of the Jane – Finch community including youth, to build awareness of organizational initiatives and increase community engagement in the work of the organization
  • Assisting with new concepts’ development, organizational position papers, annual reports, and other communications as required
  • Assisting with preparing grant proposals by developing new concepts that align with organizational priorities
  • Identifying collaboration and sponsorship opportunities
  • Providing accurate feedback to the CEO on various matters, including the efficacy of the project
  • Representing the organization at various community events, committees / taskforces, and network meetings to ensure that the organization’s interests are presented and reported on
  • Supporting the meetings of the Board of Directors by ensuring the preparation of monthly project update reports
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications / Education :

    Applicants must have a post-secondary degree in social work, sociology, humanities, communication, or other relevant areas of study, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Required Experience :

  • Demonstrated experience of at 3 least years in leading, planning and implementing community programs that support BIPOC communities and advance equity and access
  • Demonstrated experience in writing grant proposals and fundraising events
  • Demonstrated experience in project management, capacity-building initiatives and development of community-based projects
  • Ensuring the organization maintains a strong, positive image to relevant stakeholders and the public.
  • Knowledge :

  • An understanding of the socio-economic and / or access to justice challenges facing BIPOC communities including anti-Black racism
  • A strong understanding of, and commitment to, positive youth development, anti-oppression principles and knowledge of the various intersections of social identities
  • Highly-developed communication and social media skills
  • Knowledge of best practices for the management responsibilities at a charity
  • Skills :

  • Proven ability to work effectively both independently and in a team-based workplace
  • Excellent written, verbal and writing skills, with a proven ability to communicate effectively across multiple formats, including digital and in person with diverse audiences, community members, funder and policymakers
  • Sound judgement, political understanding, ability to work independently on confidential and sensitive matters
  • Responsibility, accountability, commitment and innovation
  • Intuitive and creative thinking skills with a solid commitment to solving complex problems through collaboration, engagement and consensus building
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced workplace
  • Demonstrated willingness and ability to be flexible and adaptable to changing priorities
  • A clear and systematic approach to work, time management, priority-setting and strong organizational skills
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace and digital systems, particularly Sheets, Drive, and Docs
  • Experience with youth programming, sail training, boating and maritime secor are a significant asset
