DEFINITION:
Under the direction of the Parks Supervisor or his/her delegate, the seasonal horticulturist II oversees plant care operations in park areas and on other municipal properties.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:
- Supports in the design, layout and installation of new or renewed landscaping areas;
- Plants, waters and maintains flower and perennial landscaping beds; and plants, prunes and/or removes trees and shrubs as directed;
- Maintains turf including top dressing, seeding, fertilizing, edging, and sod installation;
- Oversees junior staff on work related to horticulture and landscaping;
- Monitors plant health and applies adequate water, mulch, amendments, and fertilizer as required;
- Implements pest and disease control measures;
- Answers questions from the public regarding horticultural work and park facilities;
- Emergency call outs, standby and shift work may be required;
- Other related duties as required.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
- Horticultural certificate (or related degree) and two years' experience in a related field is required;
- Considerable knowledge of landscaping practices including pruning techniques, weed and pest management, proper planting practices, and the application of organic soil amendments;
- Working knowledge and safe operation of small horticultural equipment including light equipment; knowledge of preventative maintenance is considered an asset;
- Ability to keep records;
- Knowledge of the theory, practices and procedures used in horticultural and ground maintenance;
- Ability to work from landscape drawings, layouts and contour maps is an asset;
- Thorough knowledge of methods, techniques and the use of materials, tools and equipment used in arboriculture preferred;
- Ability to deal with the public in a tactful and courteous manner, providing efficient customer service;
- Landscape Pesticide Applicators Certificate is considered an asset;
- Leadership and supervisory experience is considered an asset;
- Must be able to work with a minimum of supervision; and
- Valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's Licence.
